This email comes from the weather email group on yahoo call WCF-SKYWARN-WARNINGS and is a direct feed from the National Weather Network, please forgive me I forgot the name of it at the time of writing this, but there is data frequency (138.something, below the 2 meter ham band) that this information is public source, and is piped directly to this email reflector as a free service. Please note Friday's comment, STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL AT 10:10 am (of course weather permitting) so chances are you will or might: A) Hear your home / work weather alert radio go off B) Hear from the local repeaters in the area that have the SAME WX-RADIO alert receiver attached to the repeater going off C) Hear your AM/FM/TV/CABLE/SATELLITE service issue the alert D) Receive a SMS / EMAIL Text message Again, it will be noted that it is a 'DRILL' at the beginning of the message. For the Amateurs who have Skywarn Spotter training, I have not had a chance to find out if WX4TOR (Tampa Bay Weather Office, Ruskin Fl.) will be on the NI4CE repeater Friday when the drill is commenced, but if they are, you can monitor the Pebbledale repeater, 442.825 pl 100.0 Hz, for any information that passed out to the Amateur Community within the West Central Florida Warning Area served by NWO Ruskin, not referring to the WCF ARRL Section, but the counties served by NOAA Weather Radio Transmitters. WC4PEM VHF and UHF repeaters, 146.985 / 444.950, has a CAT 'SAME' WX-200 receiver that is tuned to 162.500 (Highlands County Tower) and serves Highlands and Polk. Any alerts for Polk County will automatically be broadcasted over the repeater. I can not answer for K4LKL 146.685 at this time, I am not sure if one was hooked up to the Cat-1000 or not. Thanks for taking time to read this. THE FOLLOWING HAZARDOUS WEATHER TOPICS REMAIN TO BE DISCUSSED... -TODAY............HURRICANES AND FLOODING -FRIDAY...........TEMPERATURE EXTREMES AND WILD FIRES AND THE STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL AT 1010 AM EST ...OVERVIEW OF THE 2007 SEASON... THE 2007 HURRICANE SEASON WAS FAIRLY QUIET... HAVING 13 NAMED STORMS...WITH 6 BECOMING HURRICANES AND 2 BECOMING MAJOR HURRICANES. THE ONLY STORM TO IMPACT WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA WAS TROPICAL STORM BARRY. THE MAIN IMPACT FROM THIS SYSTEM WAS BENEFICIAL RAINFALL... WITH COASTAL COUNTIES RECEIVING 2 TO 5 INCHES ACROSS THE AREA. FOR FULL DETAILS OF THE 2007 HURRICANE SEASON...GO TO THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE: NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER DETAILED SUMMARIES: HTTP://WWW.NHC.NOAA.GOV/2007ATLAN.SHTML AND CLICK ON THE STORM NAME FROM THE LIST. ...HURRICANE DANGERS... HURRICANE INTENSITY IS EXPRESSED BY RELATING WIND SPEEDS AND POTENTIAL DAMAGE. THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE RANGES FROM CATEGORY 1 (MINOR TO MODERATE DAMAGE) TO CATEGORY 5 (CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE). THE CHANGE FROM ONE CATEGORY TO THE NEXT IS EXPONENTIAL...NOT LINEAR. FOR EXAMPLE...A CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE WILL NORMALLY CAUSE MORE THAN 100 TIMES THE DAMAGE OF A CATEGORY 1. TORNADOES ARE A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH LANDFALLING HURRICANES. MOST OCCUR WITH THE OUTER RAIN BANDS...AND DEVELOP WHEN FRICTIONAL CONVERGENCE INTERCEPTS THE ROTATING PRECIPITATION AREA. HURRICANE- SPAWNED TORNADOES ARE GENERALLY LESS INTENSE AND MORE SHORT LIVED THAN THOSE IN ROTATING SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. HOWEVER... THEY CAN BE DIFFICULT TO DETECT WHILE ENSHROUDED IN TORRENTIAL RAIN. HURRICANE FORCE WINDS CAN EASILY DESTROY POORLY CONSTRUCTED BUILDINGS AND MOBILE HOMES. LIGHTWEIGHT OUTDOOR ITEMS (SUCH AS LAWN FURNITURE)... ROOFING MATERIAL...AND POORLY FASTENED SIGNS CAN BECOME MISSILES IN A HURRICANE. TREES AND POWER LINES SUSTAIN EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN ANY HURRICANE...AND DANGEROUS STORMS (CATEGORY 3 AND HIGHER) CAN CAUSE LONG-LASTING DAMAGE TO URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE. THE FOLLOWING ARE HIGH WIND PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS THAT CAN BE TAKEN NOW BY ALL RESIDENTS: - FIND OUT IF YOUR HOME MEETS CURRENT BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGH WINDS. STRUCTURES BUILT TO MEET OR EXCEED CODE HAVE A SUBSTANTIALLY HIGHER CHANCE TO SURVIVE. - PROTECT YOUR WINDOWS BY INSTALLING COMMERCIAL SHUTTERS...PREPARING 5/8 INCH PLYWOOD PANELS...AND/OR INSTALLING HURRICANE WINDOW FILM. BE SURE TO ALSO INSTALL ADEQUATE FASTENERS OR ANCHORING DEVICES. - IF YOU DO NOT LIVE IN A MOBILE HOME... DESIGNATE AN INTERIOR ROOM WITH NO WINDOWS AS A 'SAFE ROOM'. - BRACE GARAGE DOORS TO WITHSTAND HURRICANE FORCE WINDS. GARAGE DOORS ARE OFTEN THE FIRST FEATURE OF A SINGLE FAMILY HOME TO FAIL. - ASSESS YOUR LANDSCAPING...THEN PREPARE IT. THIS INCLUDES TRIMMING DEAD WOOD AND WEAK BRANCHES FROM ALL TREES AND CUTTING DOWN ANY DYING OR DEAD TREES AND BUSHES. IF LANDSCAPING...CONSIDER MATERIALS OTHER THAN GRAVEL OR SMALL ROCKS. STORM SURGE IS THE GREATEST THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COASTLINE WITH A LANDFALLING HURRICANE. STORM SURGE IS CREATED WHEN A HURRICANE'S STRONGEST WINDS BLOW ONTO THE COAST AS THE STORM'S CENTER MOVES ONSHORE. AS WATER BECOMES SHALLOWER CLOSE TO THE BEACHES...THE WATER PILES UP AND IS DRIVEN INLAND. HOW MUCH SURGE WILL OCCUR AND HOW FAR INLAND IT WILL PUSH DEPENDS ON MANY FACTORS... INCLUDING THE STRENGTH OF THE HURRICANE...ITS FORWARD SPEED AND THE SHAPE OF THE COASTLINE. HOWEVER...THE EFFECTS OF STORM SURGE DECREASE RAPIDLY AS YOU MOVE INLAND. THIS IS WHY IT IS ESSENTIAL TO KNOW YOUR EVACUATION ZONE AND TO FOLLOW ORDERS FROM LOCAL OFFICIALS WHEN THE SUNCOAST IS IN DANGER OF STORM SURGE. FRESHWATER FLOODING IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MORE THAN HALF THE FATALITIES FROM TROPICAL CYCLONES IN THE UNITED STATES. INLAND FLOODING CAN BE A CATASTROPHIC THREAT TO COMMUNITIES WELL INLAND FROM THE COAST AS TORRENTIAL TROPICAL RAINS PERSIST AND THE WATER DRAINS AND COLLECTS INTO AREA LAKES AND RIVERS. THE FOLLOWING ARE FRESHWATER FLOOD PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS THAT CAN BE TAKEN NOW BY ALL RESIDENTS: - LEARN YOUR VULNERABILITY TO FLOODING BY DETERMINING THE ELEVATION OF YOUR PROPERTY. - EVALUATE YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE; AS DEVELOPMENT CHANGES, SO TO FLOOD PLAINS. IF YOU ARE IN A FLOOD AREA, CONSIDER WHAT MITIGATION MEASURES YOU CAN TAKE NOW. - IF YOU LIVE IN A FLOOD PRONE AREA, ACQUIRE MATERIALS SUCH AS SANDBAGS, PLYWOOD, PLASTIC SHEETING, LUMBER, SHOVELS, WORK BOOTS AND GLOVES. CONTACT YOUR LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICE TO LEARN HOW TO CONSTRUCT PROPER PROTECTIVE ELEMENTS AROUND YOUR HOME. - TEST DRINKING WATER FOR POTABILITY; WELLS SHOULD BE PUMPED AND TESTED AS WELL. THE STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL IS AIMED AT TESTING COMMUNICATION... DISSEMINATION...AND PREPAREDNESS FOR EMERGENCY WEATHER SITUATIONS AFFECTING PUBLIC PLACES...INCLUDING SCHOOLS AND GOVERNMENT FACILITIES. ...TEMPERATURE EXTREMES... WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA IS WELL KNOWN FOR IT'S HOT AND HUMID SUMMERS. HOWEVER...DESPITE RELATIVELY SMALL TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SUMMER AND WINTER...EXTREMES OF WARM AND COLD OCCUR JUST ABOUT EVERY YEAR. ...SUMMER'S HEAT... BETWEEN JUNE AND SEPTEMBER...THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY ACROSS WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA OFTEN MAKES IT FEEL LIKE 100 DEGREES OR MORE. THESE HEAT INDEX VALUES CAN TAKE A TOLL ON THE HUMAN BODY... ESPECIALLY IF UNPREPARED. WHEN THE HEAT INDEX REACHES OR EXCEEDS 105...THE THREAT FOR MORE SERIOUS HAZARDS INCREASES. THESE INCLUDE HEAT CRAMPS...HEAT EXHAUSTION...AND HEAT STROKE. HEAT ILLNESS CAN BE FATAL. THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME HEAT SAFETY RULES: -NEVER LEAVE A CHILD OR PET IN UNATTENDED VEHICLES...EVEN FOR A MOMENT. -DRINK PLENTY OF NON-ALCOHOLIC FLUIDS...PREFERABLY WATER. -DRESS IN LOOSE...LIGHTWEIGHT...AND LIGHT FITTING CLOTHING AND USE SUNSCREEN TO AVOID GETTING SUNBURNS. -STAY OUT OF THE SUN...ESPECIALLY AROUND MIDDAY...AND REMAIN NEAR AIR CONDITIONED LOCATIONS. -RESTRICT STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO A COOLER TIME OF DAY. A HEAT INDEX CHART IS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB AT HTTP://WWW.WEATHER.GOV/OM/HEAT/INDEX.SHTML ...WINTER'S FREEZE... FREEZING WEATHER OCCURS OFTEN IN FLORIDA AND IT CAN BE A KILLER. SINCE 2001...2 PEOPLE DIED FROM COLD-RELATED CONDITIONS ACROSS THE STATE. TEMPERATURES DON'T NEED TO REACH FREEZING TO CAUSE POTENTIAL HAZARDS. TEMPERATURES IN THE MID TO UPPER 30S WITH A MODERATE WIND CAUSES WIND CHILL VALUES THAT MAKE THE TEMPERATURE FEEL LIKE FREEZING. THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME COLD SAFETY RULES: -STAY INDOORS AND USE SAFE HEATING SOURCES. -KEEP SPACE HEATERS AND CANDLES AWAY FROM ALL FLAMMABLE MATERIALS... SUCH AS CURTAINS AND FURNITURE...AND INSTALL SMOKE DETECTORS. -INDOORS...DO NOT USE CHARCOAL OR OTHER FUEL-BURNING DEVICES SUCH AS GRILLS THAT PRODUCE CARBON MONOXIDE...AND INSTALL AT LEAST ONE CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR. -OUTDOORS...STAY DRY AND IN WIND PROTECTED AREAS. -WEAR MULTIPLE LAYERS OF LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHES AND A HAT AND GLOVES. -DRINK PLENTY OF LIQUIDS AND EAT HIGH-CALORIE FOODS. A WIND CHILL CHART IS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB AT HTTP://WWW.WEATHER.GOV/OM/WINDCHILL/INDEX.SHTML FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT TEMPERATURE EXTREMES...PLEASE VISIT THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE: HTTP://WWW.FLORIDADISASTER.ORG/KIDS/INDEX2.HTM ...WILD FIRES... A WILDFIRE IS AN UNDESIRABLE FIRE OCCURRING IN THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. THE THREE COMPONENTS NECESSARY TO START A FIRE ARE OXYGEN...FUEL...AND HEAT. IN FLORIDA SINCE 2000....MORE THAN 27000 WILDFIRES HAVE DEVASTATED OVER ONE MILLION ACRES. WILDFIRES CAN RESULT IN THE LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY. THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF WILD FIRES CAN BE FELT STATEWIDE. IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY...ROADS AND TOURIST ATTRACTIONS CAN BE FORCED TO CLOSE DUE TO HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS. THE HIGH COST OF RESPONDING TO AND RECOVERING FROM WILDFIRES CAN DEPLETE STATE RESOURCES AND INCREASE INSURANCE RATES. BUSINESSES THAT DEPEND ON TIMBER...SUCH AS PAPER MILLS AND LUMBER COMPANIES...EXPERIENCE LOSSES THAT ARE OFTEN PASSED ALONG TO THE CONSUMERS THROUGH HIGHER PRICES...AND SOMETIMES JOBS ARE LOST AS WELL. FLORIDA IS HOME TO MILLIONS OF RESIDENTS WHO ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY AND WARM CLIMATE. AS FLORIDA'S POPULATION CONTINUES TO GROW...MANY PEOPLE ARE CHOOSING TO LIVE IN OR AROUND WOODED AREAS. THE POINT AT WHICH WOODLAND AREAS MEET WITH RESIDENTIAL HOMES AND SUBDIVISIONS IS CALLED THE WILDLAND-URBAN INTERFACE. FEW PEOPLE REALIZE THAT THESE QUALITIES CREATE SEVERE WILDFIRE CONDITIONS. EACH YEAR THOUSANDS OF ACRES OF WILDLAND AND MANY HOMES ARE DESTROYED BY FIRES THAT CAN ERUPT AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR FROM A VARIETY OF CAUSES INCLUDING ARSON...LIGHTNING AND DEBRIS BURNING. ADDING TO THE FIRE HAZARD IS THE GROWING NUMBER OF PEOPLE LIVING IN THE NEW COMMUNITIES BUILT IN AREAS THAT WERE ONCE WILDLAND. THIS GROWTH PLACES EVEN GREATER PRESSURE ON FLORIDA'S WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS. AS A RESULT OF THIS GROWTH...FIRE PROTECTION BECOMES EVERYONES RESPONSIBILITY. RESIDENTS CAN HELP TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY BY TAKING ACTION AND THROUGH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS SUCH AS FIREWISE THAT CAN REDUCE THE THREAT OF WILDFIRES THROUGH FIRE RESISTANT CONSTRUCTION AND LANDSCAPING TECHNIQUES. A FIREWISE HOME HAS DEFENSIBLE SPACE... LEAN...CLEAN AND GREEN LANDSCAPING...FIRE RESISTANT ROOF CONSTRUCTION AND FIRE RESISTANT EXTERIOR CONSTRUCTION AND ATTACHMENTS. (K4BYF, please forward to Lake Wales Radio Assoc. members) Dear Local Area Amateur Operators, In working with Polk County ARES, and MID FLA MS150 Communications, I invite you all to take a minute to read the two emails I have enclosed. First email give details of what is to come and what will take place. In the second email from Paul Toth, there is a need for drivers but most of all CO-PILOTS to work with the SAG trucks and Supply trucks. Those that can spend Saturday and Sunday riding shotgun with the supply trucks, and have UHF portable gear (mobile, mag mount and UHF ant.) this would be the easiest event you could ever work! Those who are able to lift and carry supplies and drive a Penske Box Truck, and have mobile gear, your help is greatly needed. Most of all, having good knowledge of East Polk County would also be great. Now, those of you who reside in the Poinciana area, there is also a need for communicators there as well. The emails give light to what was brought forward during the planning committee's conference call Thursday, if you can take even one day to assist with this event, please be sure to mark on your calendars, March 27th at 6:30 pm, to attend the PRE-RACE briefing that will be taking place at the Polk ARES Monthly meeting, which is held at the Polk County EOC. There will also be some information for those who are awaiting your ARES ID's, more on this later. Again, please take a moment to read the two emails I am forwarding, sign-up and registration information can be done at the ARES meeting or by contacting Jason, KD4ACG at Maps will be posted to www.polkemcomm.org as soon as they are available, as well as the MS150 email reflector file section. Riding shotgun could not be any more fun then this! *** UHF mobiles will be needed, and if you have portable APRS gear, bring that along also. D* note: Those with D-Star radio's will also be able to D-PRS your positions through the KJ4ACN D-Star System via KJ4ACN port B 441.975, if you have any questions, please contact me directly for setting up your radio.
