For the 2006 Field Day, we ran off of battery power exclusively and use a steam generator to recharge the batteries as necessary. For the 2007 Field Day, we also ran completely battery powered (3A) and had no need to generate power to recharge. The batteries were charged initially from grid power. We did use PV cells to power a radio and make contacts at the early stages of last year's Field Day. The equipment used can be verified by K1DU who is our excellent Field Day coordinator. > I know I don't have enough technical knowledge right now to know where to even really begin, but starting > now should definitely provide enough time to plan an eco-centric Field Day event for next year. I think that we should be careful in this area because there are a lot of folks, including myself, who don't buy wholesale into the idea of man-made global warming (this was one of the coldest years on record as a matter of fact). While I do think that using PV cells is a great idea, there are other side effects to alternative energy that are hurting us right now. One example is the high price of corn, and products derived from corn, due to the diversion of a larger portion of that crop towards the production of Ethanol. This has had a ripple effect as well, manifested as reduced production of soy and other staple food crops as farmers move toward corn production in favor of their traditional crops. This flies straight in the face of the fact that corn is a poor source of energy when compared to switchgrass, but hype is hard to fight. Making knee-jerk decisions about using a food crop for energy when we have no replacement for the food and still have abundant sources of the existing energy source is teaching us a lesson right now about looking at the whole picture. Bringing this back on-topic, I would welcome any PV cells to the event and would love to help build an array powerful enough to keep our AGM & other batteries charged. Using PV cells to power some fans to keep us cool would also be nice. To: "SEMARA" , Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello people: In what our Section Manager Art Greenberg will say is in the interest of amateur radio, I have a news item of some small importance here, please alert your club personnel and publish this news in your club newsletters and on your club websites. We hams are having to put up with a loss of our ability to use the440 mhz band in this area because of the Pave Paws installation here, but now there comes another threat to our use of this band--nationwide. It seems that a commercial concern has applied for a waiver to utilize these frequencies for incidental control of a remote controlled surveillance 'robot'. I'm including the released information here-- please make your comments known to the FCC. A situation like this led to our loss of part of the 220 mhz band to a commercial package carrier--who ultimately gave up on using the allocation, and now the remaining 220 mhz band is hardly used at all--the ham manufacturers don't really make radios for the 220 mhz band anymore. It can be argued that we don't want to lose the 440 mhz band in a similar manner. Even though this waiver spells out use only at isolated incidents along with other restrictions, how long would it be until a waiver application was made to remove the restrictions? It may well be worth our while to send notice to the FCC that this doesn't sit well with us--the amateur community, and that other similar frequencies are available or may soon be available that would better suit this type application. Please help spread the word--and help protect our band allocations. 73, Chris J Smith, K1CJS Eastern Mass. Human energy can be used to generate power to operate a radio station. That energy would come from calories burned, and not only benefit the environment, but the energy producer him or herself. The idea of a green field day not only displays the club's concern for the enviornment but also gives us good experience in working under adverse conditions when solar, wood or other alternative sources of energy is our only option. Let's hear some ideas from other members of the club on this subject. 73, Dan WZ1P ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No virus found in this incoming message. As we prepare for the 2008 Hurricane Season, I wanted to make a couple comments about the VoIPWXNet email list and also announce the WX4NHC Communications Test. This has been sent as a special notice to those members of the email list who will only receive emails when it is sent as a special notice by the moderator. The VoIPWXNet email list is our main way to push announcements for Communications Tests, exercises, VoIP Hurricane Net activation notices, announce tropical systems as they form and they're potential threat and to discuss the usage of EchoLink/IRLP/VoIP modes for hurricanes, weather related incidents and similar disaster related incidents. We would like to encourage folks, particularly in hurricane prone areas who may just have this list set to no email to have it changed to sending email to your accounts so we can reach more people this way and reach you. Also, our web site at http://www.voipwx. net serves as another way to monitor our plans for activation and tropical systems as they threaten. I realize that in the past the email list have had some inappropriate discussions that caused people to leave the list or go to the no email option. We have several moderators and if such inappropriate discussions occur again, within 24-48 hours, we will move the email list to moderation to prevent that from becoming a distraction. We may announce this or do this unannounced at our discretion so that the email list and the discussions are reasonable and informative to those on this list. We hope that with this assurance folks will take in the emails so we can push important messages to folks particularly to those in hurricane prone areas that could be affected by landfalling systems where we could use their support and reporting and we, in turn, can help them as best as we can through the situation. Below is the WX4NHC Communications Test Announcement. We encourage all stations to participate particularly those stations in hurricane prone areas along the US Coast as well as Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean: The VoIP Hurricane Net will be supporting the WX4NHC Communications Test scheduled for Saturday May 31st from 9 AM-5 PM EDT. WX4NHC will be on the VoIP Hurricane Net *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 reflector system from 1-3 PM EDT (1700-1900 UTC) Saturday. We would like to encourage all licensed Radio Amateurs to participate in this Communications Test and attempt to contact WX4NHC on HF and also make contact when they are on the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 reflector system. Below is the announcement just issued by Julio Ripoll-WD4R, Assistant WX4NHC Coordinator: Announcement from WX4NHC Amateur Radio Station at the National Hurricane Center WX4NHC Hurricane Season 2008 On-The-Air Station Test Saturday, May 31st, 2008 from 9 AM - 5 PM EST (1300z-2100z) Our new NHC Director Bill Read, KB5FYA will also be making some contacts. The purpose of this annual Station Test is to test all of our radio equipment, computers and antennas using as many modes and frequencies as possible. Well I was looking over the ARRL website and came across this: ARRL Kids Day Purpose: Kids Day is an on-air event to encourage young people (licensed or not) to have fun with Amateur Radio. It is designed to give on-the-air experience to youngsters and hopefully foster interest in getting a license of their own. It is also intended to give older hams a chance to share their station and love for Amateur Radio with their children. Dates:Saturday, June 21, 2008, 1800z ? 2400z. Operate as much or as little as you like. Suggested exchange: Name, age, location and favorite color. Be sure to work the same station again if an operator has changed. To draw attention, call "CQ Kids Day." Suggested Frequencies: 28.350 to 28400 MHz, 24.960 to 24.980 MHz, 21.360 to 21.400 MHz, 18.140 to 18.145 MHz, 14.270 to 14.300 MHz, 7.270 to 7.290 MHz, 3.740 to 3.940 MHz, as well as your favorite 2- meter repeater (with permission of the repeater's sponsor). Be sure to observe third-party restrictions when making DX QSOs. Now seeing this can be done on 2 meter repeater too (with permission of the repeater's sponsor ("Trustee") I was thinking of the date being June 21st (One week before Feild Day) that if the local kids liked it on the repeater they may even like it better during field day making contacts around the country if not some DX as well. This may help boost and get a head start on feild day points. 73 George KI4NBE From marvin_johnson_33801 at yahoo.com Thu May 29 13:27:38 2008 From: marvin_johnson_33801 at yahoo.com (marvin_johnson_33801) Date: Thu, 29 May 2008 20:27:38 -0000 Subject: LARC financial report Message-ID: I am posting a current financial report for the Lakeland Amateur Radio Club since I will be unable to attend the June monthly meeting as I am having (outpatient)arthoscopic surgery on my left shoulder to repair a torn rotator cuff tendon May 30 and will be unable to drive for a while. 73 Marvin KI4CDZ Beginning balance May 1----------$2,713.08 Income for month of May-------------150.50 Disbursments for month of May-------155.92 Ending balance May 31------------$2,707.66 Designated funds (education)------1,518.70 Available funds------------------$1.188.96 From kd4efm at kd4efm.org Thu May 29 18:22:16 2008 From: kd4efm at kd4efm.org (Evans F. Altough I have not heard anything at this time if we are again setting up this year. It would be a great time for the Lakeland Amateur Radio Club Emergency Communication Team Members to get together and do this. Talking with the public on how Amateur Radio takes a BIG Role during Hurricane's or total communication blackouts is a big plus for LARC, a big plus to inform how we get the messages out to where they need to go. Also speaking of Hurricanes and the 2008 season opens this coming Sunday June 1st. I would like to see the LARC ECT do a live on air Drill from the Lakeland EOC Radio Room. This Room hasn't been used and needs to be or has us LARC ECT been doing and Drills that are well over do. We are Emergency Communication Operators need to stay on our toes, we never know when a real life Emergency is going to hit our area and we need to know where we stand and all goes smooth in a life Emergency. I know Feild Day is what we are mainly going to be talking about at the next LARC meeting but maybe we can also fine a little times to plan for our LARC ECT too. 73 de George/KI4NBE -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
