Message-ID: Guys & Gals, It looks like we are still on track for some strong storms during the Monday-Tuesday 02/02-03/2009 period. It appears that the surface extratropical (cold) low will cross the peninsula and given that and other strong atmospheric dynamics some isolated severe weather is possible. During the Wednesday-Friday 02/04-06/2009 period another significant freeze event is probable with the coldest day being the 5th.. Minimum temperatures could drop as low if not lower than the last freeze that occurred between 01/20-24/2009. In inland rural areas the subfreezing line will extend as far south as Immokalee in the Everglades. As before there is also a slim chance for ocean effect snow showers along the west coast of the central peninsula, with better chances over NE Florida on early Wednesday morning the 18th. We should then see a mild to warm period between approximately 02/07-14/2009 followed more cold weather. Take Care, Thomas F. THE ARCTIC AIR WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA TONIGHT AND A HARD FREEZE WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED. LOWS BY THURSDAY MORNING WILL BE IN THE LOWER 20S IN THE NORMALLY COLDER LOCATIONS AND AROUND 30 DEGREES NEAR THE COAST. A HARD FREEZE WARNING MEANS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE IMMINENT OR HIGHLY LIKELY. THESE CONDITIONS WILL KILL CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE VEGETATION. A FREEZE WARNING IS ISSUED FOR 3 OR MORE HOURS OF TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 27 AND 32 OVER A WIDESPREAD AREA. RESIDENTS SHOULD COVER OR MOVE INDOORS ANY COLD SENSITIVE PLANTS...AND BRING PETS INDOORS THIS EVENING. SIGNIFICANT FREEZES FORECAST NEARLY STATEWIDE ~ Wind Chill Warnings in Effect Tonight for all of East Central Florida and the Treasure Coast ~ TALLAHASSEE - State emergency management and fire officials are urging residents throughout the Sunshine State to practice the ?Five P?s? of cold weather safety as the latest arctic blast brings the coldest temperatures of the winter to the Florida peninsula during the next two nights. A frigid and exceptionally dry air mass has funneled into the state behind an arctic cold front. The high pressure center that is driving this frigid air mass southward will remain situated over the Tennessee River Valley tonight. This feature will keep northwesterly winds in the 10-15 mph range through Thursday morning across much of the peninsula. These winds in combination with below freezing temperatures will produce wind chills in the teens as far south as Lake Okeechobee. Wind chill warnings have been issued for all of east central Florida and the Treasure coast through Thursday morning. Hard freeze warnings have been posted into interior south and southwest Florida tonight, including interior Collier and Palm Beach counties. Freeze warnings are in effect for all of Florida except for coastal Miami-Dade County and the Keys. The polar high pressure center will settle over north Florida on Thursday evening. This will allow winds to diminish nearly statewide, setting the stage for heavy frost formation on Friday morning. A hard freeze and near record low temperatures are again likely for most interior sections of the peninsula. Please remember to practice the "5 P's of cold weather safety" this week: 1. Protect People 2. Protect Pets 3. Protect Plants 4. Protect Exposed Pipes 5. Practice Fire Safety ?This air mass may bring even colder temperatures than the state experienced in late January,? said State Meteorologist Ben Nelson. ?Many residents and businesses will be using space heaters or fireplaces and we are urging them to do so safely.? Residents should check the operation of their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, making sure to replace the old batteries. Electrical extension cords need to be in proper condition and correct rating for the heater. Persons should not overload wall plugs and individual circuits with multiple appliances. Some important safety tips to keep in mind from the Division of State Fire Marshal: ? Have gas heaters and other gas appliances checked for leaks or damage. ? Check and clean air conditioners for any dust that could spark a fire when turned on for the first time. ? Keep space heaters at least three feet away from furniture, walls and drapes. ? Clean chimneys regularly and do not burn anything in the fireplace other than firewood. ? Keep children and pets away from any flame or fire source. ? Review and practice your family?s fire escape plan. With a north wind of 8-16 mph it will be difficult to protect decorative plants and flowers as well as crops. The wind chill will temperature will be between 5-15 degrees. At 3:00 pm dewpoint temperatures have crashed into the single digits north, single digits to teens central, 20's and 30's south and 40's in the Keys. We will see a hard advection (windy) freeze tonight across the panhandle north and north peninsula. The hard freeze will extend southward through the inland rural central peninsula and inland rural south peninsula, down to approximately the latitude of Immokalee. Coastal areas of the central peninsula will dip below freezing with near freezing in coastal areas of the south. Only the urban SE coastal areas and the Keys will escape a freeze. Minimum temperature will dip to the low to mid teens across the panhandle north and north peninsula, mid teens to low 20's inland rural areas of the central peninsula, low to mid 20's inland rural areas of the south peninsula down to approximately the latitude of Immokalee, upper 20's to low 30's in inland rural areas of the Everglades. Urban areas of the central peninsula will see the mid to upper 20's, urban coastal areas of the central peninsula will see low 30's. Urban areas of the south peninsula will see upper 20's to low 30's, urban areas of the SW and SE coasts will see low to mid 30's, with upper 30's to upper 40's on the Keys. With the wind staying up between 10-20 mph during the overnight hours wind chill temperatures will be between 5-10 deg north, 10-15 deg central, 15-25 deg south, 30's in the Keys. With the wind, cold protection of ornamental plants, agriculture and citrus crops will be difficult. Tropical fish farms are also in harms way. Take Care, Thomas F. CWOP #6582 in the Kathleen area had a min temp of 22 deg. Here in the highlands of south Lakeland I had a min temp of 27 deg. I had a min wind chill temp of 17 deg. Lakeland Linder AP had a minimum temperature of 28 deg. Tonight should be just about as cold as last night especially the locations not up on the ridges. I'll have a statewide tally of minimum temperatures later this evening. Normally I do it in the morning but I've been outside all day in the cold putting up a 1/4 wave coaxial inverted L for 160 meters. 73 & GUD DX, Thomas F. What summary do you have??? I had some people tell me this morning at my work place (Publix Pix) they had temps as low as 24 AT SUNRISE, and one guy told me he had a wind chill of 4 above 0 around 755 am. One more blast of cold air coming this way, to bad it's a month and a had late for CHRISTMAS.... I just heard Florida was moving south of the Caribbean...... for the umpteen millionth time today... I think it's nice to experience cool conditions at times instead of 3 seasons of summer and a teasing winter.... Oh well, Florida will be Florida, and Global WARMING will keep us cooler... ha ha ha Evans -----Original Message----- From: LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com [mailto:LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Thomas F. The last time this happened on the same dates was in March 1980. The north and central parts of the state could also see record breaking minimum temperature on Tuesday morning March 3, 2009, with the subfreezing line extending southward into the inland rural central peninsula. But before that a slight chance for severe weather will exist for the same areas during the day on Sunday. But what do I know? Take Care, Thomas F.
