Welcome to 2009! First thing in order, I would like to thank those who supported me and continue to support me as we move forward with 2008. I want to personally thank Loren, Laura, Steve, Thom, and many others who have come to the aid of building Polk ARES and getting this function back in order. I, by far, can tell you it is too much for just one person to do on their own free will. I want to also thank Polk County Emergency Management personnel, Paul Womble, and Richard Sharp. These two gentlemen are the driving force behind the repeaters that we use on a daily basis, and have used in the past for emergency communications when POLK ARES was called upon. Thank You. Next ARES NET: January 14th, 7:30 PM, WC4PEM Repeaters Next ARES MEETING: January 29th, 6:30 PM, POLK EOC. I would like to take a moment and open this up a little more to what one goal that still stands, and needs some focus on this year. We now have a working "TRUE" Polk ARES Identification Card, I want to thank my Assistant EC, Laura Pennington and Billy Abernathy on this project. Now, moving forward with our current membership, I want to recruit new and old members back to ARES. It needs to be said, that with our current man-power, we are still under staffed in the event Polk County where to suffer a catastrophe, it would cripple even the strongest agency in the state. Communications would for the less be unbearable, thou, Amateur Radio Operators always come through, however, the need for those to lead the way is short. I only ask this, if you are not involved in ARES, please consider joining. I would look forward to seeing new faces, and even enlighten to see our younger hams joining us as well. There is plenty of room for them to play! For the 2009 year, the main focus is membership, but more than that, the focus is also on Shelter Operators. Again, with so many shelters around the county, we are not super-hero enough to be at all of them at one time. The primary shelters that are around the county are in need of having a team of operators to assist in communications, traffic handling, and possibly assisting other friends of the community while at a shelter. There is such a calming joy that overcomes me when I help someone else, and I get a smile in return. I just love that. While you read on, please take a moment to think about what you can do to help out Polk ARES, and Polk Emergency Management, when it comes to helping out at a shelter near you. Event Happenings: Meetings are on the LAST THURSDAY of each month January, Field Day 2009 Planning, Welcome to new members, other business items. February: Planning for the up-coming Field Day 2009, MS-150 Bike-a-thon info and sign-up which will be in May this year, and ENTIRELY within Polk County. March: BIKE MS (Bike Race PRE-BRIEFING, to talk about the routes and how Polk County has 90 percent of the race in the county, why communications is important, and any Q & A that race volunteers may have for them. Polk ARES will be supplying communications from the Lunch Stop. April: planning meeting for Field Day 2008; gear, class, who, what, and beverages, and food, and more beverages... May: BIKE MS BIKE Race, POLK ARES EVOLUTION! May 16th and 17th. Polk County Emergency Management to help with Communications as well. Hurricane Season Preparations, You have a radio you still can not figure out? Bring it, you have questions for Paul Womble, bring them. You have a desire to help out, COME SEE US! June: this is a ways down the path but looking to have a presentation of DIGITAL HF MODES, not D-Star stuff, but PSK-31, MSFK, RTTY, SSTV, and other modes.. July through the end of the year... I am not that far ahead in thought, but open to suggestions. Let me or any of the staff members know. Closing notes: I want to make sure we all know what is going on here with Polk ARES. I also have made the motion to advance to General Class this year. I only ask that we do our part and help Polk ARES grow. I think it would be nice to have our SkyWARN members come together and start a net soon. It would be helpful to many to get that back into action. There is planning going on with the Polk CERT members of creating their own net that will be taking place on the WC4PEM repeaters also. More to come when I find out the information. Summertime is coming soon, but we are not out of the fire season yet, not by a long shot, so we all need to be vigilant for these fires as well as the storms as they roll through the area. I want to thank you for taking some time to read this letter, please keep in mind, ARES needs some help still, but with the staff it has now, it is well off to a grand start. I look forward to helping the Amateurs of Polk County out during the time of need, but further more, I hope to help a group of ARES Leaders achieve that same goal during their time as well. That means that the information I garnered from the NASA Spaceweather dot com website on the solar cycle 24 sunspot group that formed in the SW quadrant of the sun on Wednesday January 07, 2009 was incorrect. 73 & GUD DX, Thomas F. Somebody is goofing off on data entry on those model runs. The 0000 and 1200 UTC runs have been flip flopping back and forth between cold and cool and this morning the 1200 UTC run is back to colder again. Remember that the temperature MOS are based on the 850 mb temperature and this air mass is Arctic in origin and heavy and shallow so won't really show up that well at 850 mb. We are in for 5-6 days of cold to cool weather with a freeze for me here in Lakeland and a hard freeze below 20 degrees for you in Gainesville. Actually the hard freeze line could reach down to Brooksville and the freeze line down to Punta Gorda. It looks like the north Florida snow event has flopped but there may be an ocean effect snow flurry from Jacksonville to St. Augustine on Saturday the 17th. With a fairly progressive jet stream we will not see a long term persistent cold pattern lock in. Thomas ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas F. The requirements changed slightly in wording and dramatically in order and numbering. The new requirements must be used by any Scout starting the Merit Badge after January 1, 2009. The order of the new requirements actually is more in line with the structure of the 3 one hour class program originally created by KF5WT and then refined by WW3Y and myself. In September, I made a quick revision to the 3 sets of PowerPoint slides and workbooks for these classes. I've now had a chance to see how they perform during an actual Radio Merit Badge Day and tweaked them further. The revised slides say "2009" on the title slide. Previous versions should be discarded. The revised PowerPoint Slides can be downloaded from my website at http://k2gw.tripod.com/radiomeritbadgeday/ or from the files section of the ScoutRadio Yahoo Group. I'm holding off on updating the student workbooks for a while. Workbooks for all merit badges are available on www.meritbadge.org and many Scouts are already familiar with that site. Their workbook based on the order of the current Radio MB requirements now matches our classes and slides. It's available at http://meritbadge.org/wiki/images/1/10/Radio.pdf I've suggested a few minor changes to the workbook to their author. Once that's done, I'll let you know. Thanks again for all your help in presenting Radio Merit Badge to Scouts. Please let us know the date when your club plans to run this year's Radio Merit Badge Day in your area. 73 Gary Wilson, K2GW _______________________________________ No viruses found in this outgoing message Scanned by iolo AntiVirus 1.5.6.4 http://www.iolo.com From kn4lf at earthlink.net Thu Jan 15 07:45:03 2009 From: kn4lf at earthlink.net (Thomas F. Early on Tuesday the cold air comes rushing back in in earnest and will linger for approximately four days. Looking at the latest GFSX model run, it is predicting that the 540 dcm thickness rain-snow line will reach down to approximately the latitude of Tampa on Tuesday. So if that were to verify, then on Tuesday evening the west coast of Florida from approximately Cedar Key to Spring Hill could see some ocean effect snow showers, with rain showers southward to Naples. The showers could penetrate inland approximately 20 miles. The GFSX model is also forecasting that the (5000 feet) 850 mb 0 deg. C temperature line will reach down to approximately the latitude of Naples and the -4 deg. C temperature line down to approximately the latitude of Tampa on Tuesday evening, holding for approximately 36 hours. If that were to verify then subfreezing minimum temperatures could reach as far south as the inland rural SW peninsula at Immokalee, with urban areas seeing near freezing temperature. The SE coast of the peninsula would be warmer due to proximity to the Gulf Stream. The subfreezing temperatures would occur on Wednesday and Thursday mornings 01/21-22/2009. Warmer weather will return beginning on Friday afternoon 01/23/2009 but no 80 deg. max. temperatures are in the offing through at least Sunday 01/25/2009. As we all know it did not get as cold during the period Wednesday-Saturday 01/14-17/2009 as the models forecasted. Why not? To explain in detail would bore the heck out of everyone so I will just say that the longwave trough in the eastern U.S. did not dip as far south into Florida as the models forecasted, so the coldest air was blocked from reaching the central and south peninsula. If the jet stream had of dipped as far south as models had forecasted then we would have seen a repeat of the January 1985 super freeze. Here is what happened during that event: Coldest early morning minimum temperatures of the 20th century on 1/21/85: North- Near Caryville -6 (that's below zero F) Chipley 2 Defuniak Springs 3 Jasper, Monticello, Quincy 4 Madison, Pensacola 5 Live Oak, Tallahassee 6 Jacksonville, Lake City, Perry 7 Crestview 8 Apalachicola 9 Central- Bushnell 12 Ridge Manor 14 Dade City 16 Plant City 17 I've been getting lot's of email requests for my weather forecasts as of late so it's time to post the following: NOTE!!! Message-ID: Guys and Gals, Taking a look at the 1200 UTC run of the GFSX forecast model, if it verifies the weather could get pretty rough in Florida on February 3-4, 2009. It looks like the surface low may undergo bombogenesis after crossing the state. It kind of reminds me of the March 1993 superstorm misnamed as the "no named" hurricane by the media. So the bottom line is that if the model verifies Florida could see a severe weather outbreak followed by another significant freeze event. 73 & GUD DX, Thomas F.
