Subject: More Late Season Cold Weather In Florida

....On Tuesday morning March 03, 2009 another late season cold wave occurred in Florida. The subfreezing line extended southward into the inland rural south peninsula down to approximately the Alligator Alley.  The temperature dropped as low as 24 deg. at Sandborn in the north, 25 deg. at Nobleton East on the west central peninsula and 30 deg. at Panther West on the SW peninsula.

At my location on the south side of Lakeland on the west central peninsula I had a minimum temperature of 30 deg. with frost, a new record low for the date.....

On Sunday March 01, 2009 snow also fell in north Florida from Jackson to Gadsden Counties NW of Tallahassee.....

Hey folks, just a note to let you know that, pursuant to the poll taken during the February 2009 club meeting, the weekly radio net time has changed from 19:30 to 19:00 start time beginning this week.  This time change will stand for the foreseeable future.

As far as the format goes, I am not going to impose my views about the suffix-only check-in method on anyone.  If you prefer to run the net by only asking for the suffix then that's fine with me.  If you prefer to ask for the entire call then that's fine as well.  The important part is to be clear up-front when you start running the net and announce to all participants the format you prefer.  If you don't know the full call of the majority of participants then simply hearing the suffix may not be sufficient to log the check-in and you will have to ask for the full call to complete the log entry.  On the other hand, I can see where suffix-only check-ins can save some time for experienced Net Control operators.  Either way, I would ask that the Net Control op do what is most comfortable for themselves and not be governed by what works best for someone else.  The informality of our net will allow you to test either style and become familiar with one or both, so take advantage of this opportunity.

For those of you checking in to the weekly net, please respect the wishes of the Net Control op and supply your call in the format requested, either full or suffix-only, and most importantly, please use phonetics (slowly, and repeat) if requested by your Net Control.  While it is a somewhat informal net, it is still managed by a designated Net Control op and the wishes of that op need to be adhered to as much as possible.  Remember, some folks are new to the Net Control op chair and/or they may be slow writers and/or may have difficulty hearing you for a variety of reasons, so please be respectful of their wishes for running the net.  Checking to ensure you aren't doubling with another operator will also ease the burden on Net Control by avoiding unnecessary requests to repeat check-ins.

Now is the time for all good volunteers to come to the aid of their clubs activity.

Chief Boatner of the Lakeland Police Dept. has personally requested our help for their Open House event on Saturday, March 21st. First let me say that this department as well as others within the city has done a lot to help our club. They have never asked us for anything that wasn't beneficial for all concerned.

We will need to have the EOC operational and  a portable station set-up in the parking lot. This can be more fun than work with enough hands sharing the task. At this time I am unsure of the hours for this event but will find out soon. They are expecting 1500-2000 guests.

This is also the day for exams at 0900 where I will be along with Jim AI4LE and Mike KT2T. I will help out with setting up before that begins as well as afterwards. Please give this request serious consideration and reply with your intentions here.

I believe that this is a good work and that we will do well if all who are able will pitch in and help.

On Friday evening NOAA/SWPC designated the new sunspot group #10114 and a solar cycle 23 sunspot group. Solar cycle 23 is now 12 years and 11 months long from first spot to present one, an extension of the already record long solar cycle!!!

I presume you are referring to the Heathkit SB101 Transciever which I had in my possession for some time.  The rig is actually owned by George Mann, KJ4UW.  I was not aware of any plans by George to dispose of it.  You will need to ascertain from him how to make the check, although if proceeds from the sale of it is to be donated to the Lakeland Amateur Radio Club, the check would be made to LARC and can be given to me at the next club meeting or mailed to: Lakeland Amateur Radio Club, PO Box 792, Eaton Park, FL., 33840

It's time once again for our annual Open House event, a chance for the public to visit your police department and tour behind the scenes at the police station. The Open House includes tours of the station and a display of our special operations equipment - a favorite of most visitors!

In addition to the ever popular helicopter, rescue vehicle, and SWAT equipment, we will be unveiling for the first time a new Mobile Operations Center, too.

We are getting closer to this year's Bike MS:The Citrus Ride event.  At last
count, registration is running even with last year's count with a couple
additional weeks of sign-up available.  The BikeMS Committee is putting a
big push on Biker Registration in the coming week in an effort to surpass
last year's participant count and, of course, donations to fight MS.
 
Evans Mitchell-KD4EFM is hosting a BikeMS meeting this coming Thursday
evening at the old Bartow Air Base between Winter Haven and Bartow.  The
meeting begins at 6:30 PM.  I will have the latest information for attendees
on the event at that time.
 
I will also be plugging in volunteers into the Assignment Sheet in the next
couple weeks.  We can then take a look at where we need any assignments
filled.
 
Paul Wonble at Polk County Emergency Management will be checking out the BOK
Tower site this week for the Mobile Command Vehicle which Polk Co. EM is,
once again, allowing us to use for Net Control operations.  I have also been
told that some improvements with the 444.950 repeater will allow a smoother,
more responsive Echolink tie with the 443.100 repeater in Kissimmee during
the event.
 
We will also have three radio-equipped Hams on bicycles during this year's
event.  Jason-KD4ACG, Dana-K4LK and Greg-NU4R will be Bicycle Mobile and
reporting in from time to time.

A new sunspot group has emerged near N25W01. It has the latitude of a solar cycle 24 sunspot group. It appears to be a reemergence of the sunspot group that first appeared at N26E51 on Sunday March 22, 2009. As has been the norm as of late it remains to be seen if it survives long enough for NOAA/SWPC to assign it a number, which would be #10115.

I have replaced the Technician Class PPs that were posted on the LARC YahoooGroups site.  The old set were locked with a (forgotten) password.  The new slides are not passworded and can be considered to be in the public domain and can be used in part or in whole however you see fit.  The QPC is currently working on the new question pool for Technician.  I plan on programing new slides when the pool becomes available.
