Subject: [bikeMS] Comms Roster - rev 05.03.2009
Attached is the latest revision to the Comms Roster for the 2009 bikeMS: The
Citrus Tour event. Please note your assignment and the information that I
currently have for you. If a cell phone number is not listed for you,
please forward this information to me if you would like the number
published.
I am expecting a determination and final decision on the location of Rest
Stop 6/1 in Osceola County tomorrow. Once that has been finalized, the
latest revision of the Route Map and Cue Sheets will also be published.
Rest Stop 2/5 in Polk County has been finalized. It will be located at "The
Barn". an antique dealership and citrus processing business located on S.
Central Avenue just South of Cox Road in Alturas.
A lot of emphasis was placed on recruiting Bicycle Teams for this year's
event. This means there may be large groupings of riders along the route
and, as you might expect, large groups of riders will hit the Rest Stops,
Lunch Stop in Dundee and also show up at major intersections. All SAG
drivers should exercise extra caution when approaching large groups of
riders as they may be riding several abreast.
The riders will be released from BOK Tower on Saturday and the Caribe Royale
Resort Sunday in several flights. The first flight each morning will
include the top fund raisers for this year's event. The second way will
include the top fund-raising teams followed by one or more flights of the
remaining riders. All riders in a given TEAM will be released at the same
time (50 mi, 75 mi and Century). Rest Stop 4 in Dundee will likely see some
riders very early Saturday morning.
We will be working closely with Polk Co. deputies and Orange Co. deputies to
make the release of the riders each morning as smooth and safe as possible
and with as little disruption as possible to vehicular traffic as possible.
On Saturday morning, we will need ALL SAG and GREENWAY units at BOK Tower by
6:15 AM for release onto the route by 6:45 AM. Several SAG operators will
be positioned along the roadway leading from the Starting Line to help
control the release of the riders. All SAGs and GREENWAY operators will
also need to be ready to roll Sunday morning by 6:45 AM unless instructed to
remain at the Caribe Royale by the Command Post or Director.
As the riders approach the Finish Line Saturday, we will be positioning
operators along Poinciana Boulevard to monitor rider progress. KJ4BET and
KD4MRL will be working as a team to give the Orange Co. deputies a heads-up
on riders approaching the major intersection of CTH 535 & CTH 536 near the
Finish Line.
If you have a handheld, portable radio, please program the Net frequencies
(444.95 [+] 127.3, 443.100 [+] 103.5) and our Traffic Control simplex
frequency (445.950) into the H/T and bring it with you.
Finally, there will be a Coordination Net at 7:00 PM on Friday, May 15th on
the NI4CE system. For those in the Orlando area, we are asking Mike-N4HHA
to link the 443.100 repeater to NI4CE for that Net.
On behalf of the MS Staff and all the people this bicycle event benefits,
thank you for volunteering and participating.

Subject: Possible Large Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group
Message-ID: <425C62FB620A44B9A0803AED897FB856@YOUR5BFDF7BC50>
During last weeks propagation forecast I said,"Recurrent sunspot group #11115 will rise above the eastern limb of the Sun on Thursday-Friday 05/07-08/2009, if it survived transit on the back side of the Sun."
It looks as though #11115 has survived. It remains to be seen whether it will be classified as recurrent #11115 or new #11117.
See below from NASA spaceweather.com http://www.spaceweather.com .
THE SUN IS STIRRING: NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft is monitoring an active region hidden behind the sun's eastern limb. On May 5th, it produced an impressive coronal mass ejection (CME, movie) and a burst of Type II radio emissions caused by a shock wave plowing through the sun's outer atmosphere. STEREO-B's extreme UV telescope captured this image during the explosion:
http://www.spaceweather.com/images2009/05may09/20090505_081530_n7euB_195_strip.jpg
At the root of all this activity is probably a sunspot. Its high latitude identifies it as a member of new Solar Cycle 24. The putative sunspot is not yet visible from Earth, but the sun is turning the region toward us for a better view. Readers with solar telescopes should keep an eye on sun's northeastern limb for an emergence on May 7th or 8th.

Subject: Back Light Failure on IC-746 Pro
Message-ID: <288B921D707244A680BE5B4FE1EC6512@YOUR5BFDF7BC50>
My oldest IC-746 Pro with a serial number of 001162 finally began suffering
the intermittent back light failure a couple of weeks ago. I ordered two
transistors (one for a backup) for $8.00 including three day USPS shipping
>From Icom in Washington.
Today I replaced the bad transistor and am good to go now. The area of the
board around the transistor did show damage (uplifted circuit board traces)
due to excessive heat do to poor design, that being no heat sinking. While
replacing
the transistor I added a heat sink so should see no more failures.
The hardest part of the repair was disassembling the front of rig which took
about 40 minutes.

Hopefully the rainfall will put out current wild fires and prevent others.
Hopefully lightning will not start any new ones.

Subject: Severe Weather
Message-ID:
We had quite a busy weather day yesterday. Heavy rainfall totals fell in downtown Lakeland with CoCoRaH's rain gauge totals of 2.50" and 2.68" respectively. In the Kathleen area CoCoRaH's rain gauge totals were 3.41" and 4.01" respectively. On the west side of town towards KLAL and County Line Road .50" diameter hail covered the ground. On the NE side of Lakeland and EF-0 tornado touched down around 5:00 pm. See LSR report below.
Here on the south side of town in the Highlands area I measured 0.81". Other nearby CoCoRaH's rain gauges measured 0.77", 0.93" and 1.18" respectively.
We could see another round of heavy thunderstorms later this afternoon. With cold and dry air in the mid levels once again, severe weather in the form of strong (60+ mph) down bursting winds, large hail > .50" in diameter and torrential rainfall > 2.00" is probable. A tornado is also possible where the east coast, west coast and outflow boundaries collide. Lightning is not a severe weather parameter but with mid level cold air (-10 deg. C at 500 mb) numerous lightning strikes are probable.
With a bit more steering flow from the east the heaviest weather could be on the west side of the county.

Hopefully lightning will not start any new ones.

The 0000 UTC run of the ECFWF model forecasts a low pressure system to be
off of the west coast of central Florida by Thursday May 21st. It would be a
cold core subtropical jet stream El Nino'ish type of low but it could
transition into a subtropical low pressure system, with a mix of cold and
warm characteristics.
Either way it "could" produce allot of rainfall for the peninsula next week.

Hi Dan I hope that you enjoyed the hurricane conference.
I have a late severe weather report for you.
5.7 miles south of Lakeland POL-10A
Rainfall- 4.27" between 6:13-11:59 pm
Rainfall- 2.00" between 6:30-7:30 pm
Considerable flooding of streets, drainage ditches, holding ponds, streams
and open fields. One building roof collapse. Lot's of stalled and flooded
cars. Failed to heed turn around don't drown rule.
Nearby CoCoRaH's rain gauges measured 5.88" and 6.02" respectively. This
verifies the 4-6" rainfall estimate by your radar for my area. See virus
free attachment.
The thunderstorm formed overhead and rained itself out with very little
movement of the storm for six hours.
This is the single largest rainfall event that I've measured at this
location going back to September 2005.
My May rainfall total is now 5.19", year 10.01"

Subject: El Nino Weather Pattern Is Here
Message-ID: <16E8130A70F44FC2A60C40188423AD40@YOUR5BFDF7BC50>
It appears as though we are now in a weak El Nino weather pattern. Just two
months ago we were still in a weak La Nina and the third year of a severe
drought. On March 19th the SOI was +7.7 and on May 19th was -7.7, quite a
reversal.
The last time that we saw such a rapid growth into an El Nino weather
pattern was in 1997. As many will remember the strongest El Nino ever
recorded was during the 1997-1998 period when tremendous record rains fell
causing extensive flooding across the state.
The recent heavy rainfall is tied to the weak new El Nino and we can expect
a wetter than normal summer and a very wet upcoming winter 2009-2010 if we
transition into a medium to strong El Nino.
We do see fewer hurricanes during an El Nino event but still quite a few
named tropical storms.

So far May 2009 is the wettest of the five May's since I have lived at this location in south Lakeland. It is the second wettest May I have seen going back to 1965.
The wettest May occurred in 1980 with 17.50" measured. This was measured in Dade City which is approximately 30 miles NW of Lakeland.
Parts of NE Florida between Daytona Beach and Jacksonville have surpassed 25" in the past four days.

The early beginning of our rainy season will be interrupted beginning on
Saturday the May 30th and lasting through Monday or Tuesday June 1st or 2nd.
The culprit is and active polar jet stream along the border of Canada and
the U.S. and including New England. This brought minimum temperatures in the
low to mid 20's this morning in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine!
The cold polar high pressure system currently centered over southern Quebec
will move out into the Atlantic Ocean, merge with the semi-permanent Bermuda
high pressure system and funnel dry sinking air at mid and upper levels into
Florida from the NE.
This scenario is actually normal and can occur as late as the third week of
June.

Subject: New Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Group
Message-ID:
Posted Sunday May 31, 2009 at http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf5.htm and
http://www.kn4lf.com/kn4lf72.htm
Today a new solar cycle 24 sunspot group emerged in the NW quadrant of the
Sun. Hopefully it will survive long enough to be numbered by NOAA/SWPC. If
so it will be the #10119 and the third numbered solar cycle 24 sunspot group
in the past two weeks.
