Hi Folks, No plans this weekend?
Then why not fire up those Radio's and do a bit of contesting?

There are two State Qso Parties fixing to kick off today at 1600 utc (Noon).
PA and AZ.
And for just those Techs that like to get in on the act there is the 10x10 winter contest Sunday and you don't need be be a member of the 10x10 to make contacts.

Good Cqing if you take part in this over the weekend..

Ok need to fire up my HF radio and hit the airwaves

Hello from Polk County ARES,

 
Polk County ARES will be active this weekend and next Thursday. Saturday, October 23rd, we will be testing a Near Vertical Incident Skywave propagation antenna attached to an HF station that will be using the digital mode PSK63. EOCs from four counties will participate in the Simulated Emergency Test. Our purpose is to use HF to connect Emergency Operation Centers in the area with a digital mode that can pass email, forms, and written traffic.

For those who want hands on instruction, show up at Polk County EOC at 830am and participate in the NVIS setup and transmission tests. If you want to monitor on HF, tune into 3.570 mHz at 10am using PSK63. The test involves four transmissions that when printed will complete a picture. Lauren Mathews, K9YCG, will be lead in this endeavor and he can be contacted at MathewsL at flash.net. 

On Thursday, October 28rd, the ARES meeting at the Polk County EOC will begin at 6pm. Our training this month is by The American Red Cross and will be a familiarization of Red Cross Shelter Operations. Shelter communications is our primary responsibility and knowing how they function is important. 

Please plan to attend and invite anyone who has an interest in Amateur Radio or public service.

Hello All,

This is Robin Retzloff, AF1RE, Emergency Coordinator for Polk County ARES. Tomorrow night we have our weekly Wednesday ARES training net. Please plan on checking in at 730pm on 146.985. This is the WC4PEM repeater with a PL tone of 127.3 Hz and a negative 600 Kz offset. If you are new to amateur radio these are the needed parameters to enter into your Handy Talky or HT as it is usually called.

If you are using an HT to join the net, you might have to go outside to get to the repeater. The repeater is located in Bartow. Try to get to an open area in the direction of Bartow. Hopefully net control will call portable, mobile and short timers early in the net. That will keep you from standing outside to long. Try transmitting your callsign on the net frequency before net time to see if you can reach the repeater.

 If you need assistance with programing your HT or other radio, bring it to the ARES meeting on Thursday at the Polk County EOC, Emergency Operation Center. Bring your manual for the radio. The meeting starts at Doors open by 6pm and the program starts at 6:30pm. Paula Doss from The American Red Cross will provide training about Emergency Shelters.

I am not an expert on these things. The proposal sounds reasonable. One ham who might be more knowledgeable about this is Chuck, W4CLL. I invited him to breakfast this coming Tuesday, and he plans to attend. I think he would make a good speaker at one of the club meetings. 

We had a d-star presentation some time back, and according that that presenter, digital was the future for several reasons including narrow bandwidth and exceptional voice quality. Of course with digital, you only get two choices, outstanding or nothing. :-) Bring the subject up Tuesday. Don Jeerings might be a good go between for you.

Hi Ren, I would like to know how this makes CURRENT FM radio's obsolete?
 
I am not to going to pick this apart piece by piece, I do not like the
wording
but the layout and thought into this by the most COMPITENT person on the FRC
is far better then ANY OF THE BOD or other District Managers...
