From kg4yni at arrl.net Wed Nov 2 14:01:33 2011 From: kg4yni at arrl.net (Ernie) Date: Wed, 02 Nov 2011 17:01:33 -0400 Subject: VE team app. Message-ID: <4EB1AFAD.10000@arrl.net> For those of you who may not know, the LARC VE team has some some upcoming changes. Through the end of this year we will continue to use the ARRL as our coordinator. Beginning01/01/12 we will use the Laurel VEC. The greatest advantage to this change is there is no charge to the candidates. Also, new callsigns and upgrades will most likely be posted sooner. If you are an accredited through another VEC and your credentials are current, the VE team would appreciate you joining us. Please print out the attached Laurel VEC application fill it out. With it put a photocopy of your current license and bring them with you to the meeting next Monday. I will be sending them to Laurel the next day. Also beginning next year, our test sessions will be held prior to regular club meetings at our regular location. I have the K-3 is on a coffee table and you can see the little end table I use to hold the keyer paddles and the little stool to keep Logger 22 going. The regulator for 220 v power is on the floor and my no name 30 amp 12 v DC switching supply is next to the rig. It's fan comes on from time to time to cool it. Seems to be a pretty good investment ( $30). The antenna matching unit sits on a car under tarp (not ours) and you can see the wire for 10 and maybe 15 meters. This homebrewed unit is for EFHW antennas and seems to work well. I did some tree surgery from the roof this a.m. I am going to redo the 40, 30, and 20 meter antennas now that some of the clutter is off the tree that I throw antenna over or that hang in it for the shorter ones.. The matching unit gives nice matches on all bands and I don't even need to use the K-3's tuner to tweak it. We live pretty close to high rise bank and a couple of telecom giants. The cell phone companies here have very deep pockets and are financing lots of construction of all sorts. I can have a pile-up any time I want if the band is open and have had times when I have logged upward of 2 QSO's in per minute. A good book for learning what you need in order to take your Technician license exam is The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual (2nd edition) ISBN # 978-0-87259-083-0. This book was designed by the ARRL (Amateur Radio Relay League) for teaching what is required to take the Technician exam. It also includes all of the exam questions and answers. Each section in the book refers to specific questions on the exam that will cover the material in that section. Additionally, each exam question in the back of the book has a page number where the information needed to answer that question is discussed.I used the previous version of this book 16 months ago prior to taking my Technician exam. The book costs $24.95 from the ARRL and $29.95 from the other sources. You can order this book online at: The ARRL online store: The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual Amazon: The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual Amateur Electronic Supply: AES Website (search for Model Number: ARR0977) There is also an AES store in Orlando where you can pick one up without having to wait for shipping. I am not annoyed by them, but I have one so it would be quite silly if I were annoyed. > Does anyone think they are practical because it makes it easier to > recognize and remember somebody because the callsign has their initials > in it? Or, maybe because they're quicker to pronounce? I acquired my vanity call solely for the ease of use in CW. I am by no means a CW expert, and in fact I am quite a novice with little improvement due to lack of time for study, but given the opportunity one day I *will* spend a lot more time with this mode and when I do my call will be fun and easy to use. > Is it better to wait and become established before getting one or is it > better to get one early so that you're not switching once other people > have memorized your callsign? The group of call available to you will depend on your license class (see http://www.arrl.org/vanity-call-signs under "Choosing a Vanity Call Sign"). If you want to get a 1x2 or 2x1 call then in my opinion it's best to wait until you've reached your license class goal and then seek a vanity call from the groups available for your license class. If you get a vanity call while a Tech, then another as a General, and yet another as Extra then there will be people who will just give up on trying to remember what call you have and when. Aside from that, it can become expensive to acquire QSL cards and other "stuff" that is emblazoned with your call every time you change, so again my suggestion is that you achieve your goal for the license class and then begin your vanity call search within the available groups for that given license class. Also, if you are from southern region and pick a vanity call from a northern region then there will be some folk who give you a good ribbing about it but it's all in good fun. Personally, I gave up after many attempts to acquire a 1x2 or 2x1 in region 4 because the demand is insane. When I finally threw in the towel and searched other regions I found KT2T just sitting out there idle with no applications. I liked the call a lot from the start, and after calculating the CW score/burden, I just had to have it. Yeah, getting a region 4 call would have been nice, but the high demand coupled with the FCC's lottery system makes it extremely difficult to win a short region 4 call.
