Thanks to all who helped make our first Laurel VEC test session 
successful. For those who may not have known, we gave one each Tech, Gen 
and Extra exam. All three passed their exams and two were able to stay 
for the meeting.

I mailed the test results Tuesday morning to the Laurel coordinator in 
Largo and Wednesday night at 8 PM their new license and upgrades were 
published on line by the FCC. I am extremely thrilled with these results 
from everyone's efforts.

It would be totally discourteous if I failed to mention the individual 
who was most responsible for all the labor in this whole project. After 
receiving the software from Laurel, everything had to be printed. This 
credit goes to Tom Evans, KJ4WFS. Thanks Tom for a job very well done.

Hillsborough County ARES/RACES is proud to sponsor 2 amateur radio courses:
the introductory Amateur Radio "Technician Class" License Course and the
General Class license upgrade course, all in a traditional classroom
setting.  Please invite your friends to come join the well over 350 people
who have taken these courses and earned or upgraded an Amateur Radio license
during the last few years. This course will be held on two Saturdays - the
7th and 21st of January, 2012.

 

Both classes will meet at the Hillsborough County Emergency Operations
Center, located at 2711 E. Hanna Ave, Tampa, FL 33610.  Class will start on
both days at 9AM and continue until 5PM. On the 21st of January, testing
will begin at 3:30PM.

 

The introductory Technician course will be based around the new "ARRL's Tech
Q & A, 5th Edition".  This book will be available to borrow at the beginning
of the first class.   The book associated with this class costs $19.95, and
is titled "The ARRL Emergency Communications Handbook". The books will be
ordered for you after the first day of class, and will be distributed on the
final day. 

 

The General Class license upgrade study book will be available to borrow at
the beginning of the first class.  The take-away book associated with this
General upgrade class costs $29.95, and is titled "The ARRL Operating
Manual".  The Operating Manual will be ordered for you after the first day
of class, and will be distributed on the final day.

 

There are no training fees for this class.  However, there is a fee of $14
for taking the test, and the books are $19.95 and $29.95, depending upon
which class you are taking.  You will pay for the test and the book at the
start of class.  Please bring a government-issued picture ID card with you,
as well.

 

The class size is limited - and you can sign up online! In order to properly
prepare materials and gauge class sizes, please send an email to
training at hcaresraces.org to reserve your seat in this class.  If you are
unable to attend both sessions of your course, please let us know about that
as well - there is some scheduling flexibility for these classes.

 

These classes wrap around a local Amateur Radio activity known as TARCFest,
at which you will have the opportunity to browse and purchase amateur radio

Please consider attending the Amateur Radio Emergency Communication Course that will be held at the Polk County EOC on January 21st and 22nd from 8am to 4pm. The only requirements are an interest in emergency communications and two web-based FEMA courses. Books will be provided to the first 17 attendees. 



Paul Womble, K4FB, Mike Green, KK4LEO, Diana Carlson, KC1SP, and myself will be the instructors. Trained radio operators are needed for EOC, ARES, Red Cross, and CERT disaster operations in Polk County. This course provides basic knowledge for emergency communications volunteers and will increase understanding of disaster communications concepts.

Hey y'all. I am in the process of putting my shack together, and had a question about feedline lightning protection. Along with a polyphaser on each coax line, I was thinking about making a window pass through unit kind of like MFJ's with banana jacks on the inside for my feedline connections, so it would be easy whenever I was off the air to just unplug and keep the lightning out of my shiny new rig... Any thoughts?

Hello, I need a Mobile Antenna Expert installer.
I'm wanting to go HF Mobile, have a Icom IC-706mkllg, Antenna is a CHAMELEON V2, the mobile is a 2005 Chevy Colorado LS 4x4 Z71.
I have the antenna installed on the left (Driver side) 1/4 panel with a hood bracket. I have tried grounding it the best I know how. The tuner shows it tunes and swr show good. I hear everything there is to be heard but no one hears me. Can someone help with this?
Is anyone up for the challenge?
Please Help, I can come to you anytime.

Hi George,
While I don't claim to be an antenna expert, I can suggest some things
to check.
1) Does the antenna have a good electrical ground at the coax attachment
point?If you can remove the antenna from its mounting base and
disconnect the radio end of the antenna cable from whatever it is
connected to, you can then measure the electrical resistance between the
point where the antenna mounts to its base and the vehicle chassis with
an ohm meter. It should be 0 ohms.
2) Have ypu checked both the center conductor and shield of the antenna
cable for 0 ohms resistance, and infinite resistance between the center
conductor and shield?
3) Have you checked the antenna to make sure it is resonant at or near
the frequency you are transmitting at using an antenna analyzer?
4) Have you verified the radio's output power using an external power
meter?
Other, more obscure things to check are mic gain and transmit modulation
percentage.
I have all of the test equipment necessary to check these things if you
need any of it.I can also help you perform the tests if you want.

While I don't claim to be an antenna expert, I can suggest some things to
check.

mounts to its base and the vehicle chassis with an ohm meter. It should be 0

cable for 0 ohms resistance, and infinite resistance between the center
conductor and shield?

 

3) Have you checked the antenna to make sure it is resonant at or near the
frequency you are transmitting at using an antenna analyzer?

 

4) Have you verified the radio's output power using an external power meter?

 

Other, more obscure things to check are mic gain and transmit modulation
percentage.

 

I have all of the test equipment necessary to check these things if you need
any of it.

I can also help you perform the tests if you want.

Tom, Thanks for all the things to try and to answer them all, I have not done any of them other then trying to make sure I have a good ground on the antenna but wasn't done with any  test equipment.
I'm just hoping that I don't have to relocate the antenna from where I have it, I really like the location on the truck, but if it has to be relocated then so be as long it works right.
When can we get together and check this? I can do this on your time as I have lots of time.

Joe Pirkle was just released from the hospital after being a patient 
for a week. He has been moved to the Palm Terrace Nursing/Rehab 
Center on Lakeland Hills Blvd. He does not know how long he will be in

My understanding is that any reasonable hour is OK. Just be aware that when you arrive, Joe may be in rehab exercises. I arrived around 4:00 PM. That seemed like a good time. He was in his room resting, before dinner, when I arrived. I know that Joe will appreciate the company.

Ok Bill, around 4:00 pm does seem to be the best time, they start dinner shortly after 5:00 pm.   Joe said that the only times they would prefer not to have visitors is 7-9 AM (not a problem for me :) and 7-9 PM.  -Later -Pat
