Click here DLP banner If you are -- or you know of -- a non-profit organization, you can Set Up a Table at April's First Friday for FREE!! April 2012 FF Poster Too much exposure is not a good thing when you're talking about sun or bad weather. But in the not-for-profit world, getting your name and mission in front of thousands of people for free is wonderful! The First Friday in April is devoted to showing off the wonderful not-for-profit organizations in Lakeland. Area non-profits are invited to set up a booth and show off the good works that they do for our community. It's our way of saying thank you to them for all that they do. Come down and find out about the multitude of services and opportunities provided by our local charities. As always, there will be music and activities in the street, shops and restaurants will be open late for your enjoyment, and the car show will be on Tennessee Avenue. For Interested Non-Profits: Normally, setting up a booth at First Friday costs organizations $100 if they are not members of the Downtown Lakeland Partnership. But, on April 6th, it'll be free for all 501c3 organizations. You've all been to First Friday, so you know the atmosphere is festive, fun and family-friendly. All you have to do is provide your booth, volunteers and a spiel. The main purpose is to raise awareness, but if you want to raise funds, you'll have to provide an activity that is attractive to attendees and will enhance the street festival feel of the event. Activities that are interactive and that will create "buzz" are the best for making sure people come to your booth - games that challenge dexterity, the intellect and luck are all fun and popular. You may sell items that represent your organization or tickets to your fund raisers. But, because we want to protect the integrity of the event, we're not going to permit organizations to simply hold out their hand and ask for donations. We're also asking your volunteers to stay in your booth and wait for the guest to approach you as opposed to passing out leaflets throughout Downtown. If you would like more information on this event, please call Meredith Spresser at (863) 510-9723. To reserve your space for this event, you must sign up no later than 5:00pm on Friday, March 30th using this link, http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3101565867 , to reserve your spot. http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs035/1102363056357/img/364.jpg Forward this email http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/SafeUnsubscribe_Footer_Logo_Ne w.png http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/CC_Footer_Logo_New.png This email was sent to jmann at verizon.net by info at downtownlakelandfl.com | Update Profile/Email Address | Instant removal with SafeUnsubscribe T | Privacy Policy . It is probably an unfortunate scheduling conflict and it may have been scheduled without the realization that there was a conflicting Board meeting tonight. We have many members and few are active, that's just the way it is. As for myself, I have a club board meeting to attend to tonight, I am working on a CW presentation with the children for the Sun 'n' Fun all of next week representing LARC, I have 6 code practice oscillators to assemble and complete for that function, I was at the LPD outing last weekend, for the last 4 weeks and currently, I'm up to my eyeballs helping Ansel with his Science Fair Project, helping Gabby with her Spanish classes, cooking, cleaning, laundry, sponsoring drunks in A.A., had to make a new bamboo fly rod for a customer, and eat dinner and shower when I get the chance. Wanna trade?? I get what you're saying and unfortunately LARC is known throughout the area and amongst other clubs to be as you describe. I've said it time and again at the Board meetings. Don't know how to change the situation!! Are we supposed to bail?? I don't think so. I stated that, as my schedule clears up a bit, I might be able to help out with the LPD Net in the future, for right now, it's not an option, there's only so many hours in my day. If you have any ideas as to how to more motivate the members, I'm all ears. Let me know. I'll bring it to the board and we'll discuss and implement what we can. The so called 80/20 rule is credited to an Italian by the name of Pareto. Among other things, he was well know as an economist. The 80/20 rule originally came from his observation that 80 percent of the land in Italy was owned by only 20 percent of the population. This was later expanded to 80 percent of the wealth is owned by 20 percent of the population. You could also argue that 80 percent of the effort is contributed by that same 20 percent who benefit. I would argue that there is a natural law that states, for the most part, you get out of life what you put into it. (Please don't interpret this as saying that hard work alone brings success. It doesn't.) You don't always get what you want, but you more often than not get what you deserve. When you think about it in this way, criticizing someone directly or indirectly for being in the 80% is rather strange. I can't ever remember someone complaining that I was not as good looking, rich, successful, or as blessed as they were. They may have thought this, and probably with good reason, but if they did, they did not share it with me. My point is simply this. It is a good thing to be part of the 20, because in the long run, you get 80 percent of the benefit. The object of the club is not to get people to work or volunteer. True, volunteers are vital to maintain activities, if the activities are interesting to members, many will show up if asked. Just make sure their help is meaningful. Some folks like to show-up for the experience, others are more hands-on. There are several factors that make for a viable club; attendance at club meeting is one. Participation at event such as field day, nets, walk-a-thons, VE sessions, picnics/breakfasts, installation banquet are some another's. If you start to run off members for lack of participation AT A particular event, you will lose your financial base to run the club. The club will also lose influence because there will be fewer members to tout the brother/sisterhood and fellowship of the club. You will lose recruiters for new members. New members and new hams bring energy to the organization. As I said the night I became president, the object of the club is to provide enjoyment for members, not necessarily marching to the drum of a particular activity. The president of the club just prior to my first term had destroyed club's enthusiasm by his insistence that the membership go along with "his" wishes. This year and the last three or four prior, the club has offered many great programs and opportunities for the membership to have fun. George Gafford is correct to be disappointed in his assessment of the lack of involvement on the part of some; I feel this is due to his tireless dedication to LARC. For his dedication, love and tireless work, George should be recognized for his beliefs and efforts. He alone cannot push water up hill. Now, everyone, let us join together and have some fun. a little involvement will make it more fun for everyone. 73 de George Mann KJ4UW From: LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com [mailto:LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Gary Lee Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 9:33 PM To: LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [LakelandARC] Re: LP EOC Net Well said Charlie, I concur 100%.
