Charles "Charlie" Hellman W2RP Licensed since 1925 Presented with Historic 90th Anniversary Award Hastings-on-Hudson, NY (August 31, 2015) Today, the Quarter Century Wireless Association, Inc. (QCWA), an international organization of amateur ('ham') radio operators---presented a 90 Year Continuous Licensed Certificate Award (Serial #1) to Charles 'Charlie' Hellman W2RP. Mr. Hellman is 105 years of age and one of the oldest living amateur radio operators in the United States. Charlie was licensed in 1925 as a 15 year-old, and joined QCWA in 1975 and is also a member of local QCWA Chapter 181 (Hudson Valley). http://www.qcwa.org/w2rp-4.jpg On hand to present the certificate, and represent QCWA President Ken Oelke VE6AFO and the membership were: Treasurer Charles Tropp N2SO, Directors Carole Perry WB2MGP and Pete Varounis NL7XM; along with QCWA Chapter 181 Secretary Mike Sturm, KA2E. Also on hand for the ceremony was Don Finkel, WA2OQM (a friend of Charlie's). The certificate reads: "The Quarter Century Wireless Association presents this 90th Anniversary Award to its Distinguished Member Charles 'Charlie' Hellman, W2RP to commemorate Ninety Years of Service as a licensed Radio Amateur". http://www.qcwa.org/w2rp-2.jpg Don, WA2OQM; Charles, N2SO; Pete, NL7XM, Charlie, W2RP(seated) and Carole, WB2MGP Mike, KA2E was the photographer for the event, his bio w/picture is at KA2E In addition to the certificate, Charlie was also presented with a letter from QCWA president Ken Oelke VE6AFO which reads in part "I would also like to say how proud I am that you have kept active for these many years, and to proudly celebrate what many will not be able to achieve in their entire lifetime. Congratulations to you on 90 years as a licensed radio amateur, and may you enjoy many more in amateur radio!" The information pertaining to Charlie was discovered when the QCWA webmaster, Bob Roske N?UF, was updating member files and discovered that Charlie was still living in New York and was certainly the oldest living member of QCWA. In recognition of his achievement the QCWA Board of Directors quickly voted to award Charlie the 90 year certificate, a first for the organization. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Fortunately though the system will disable a channel that is experiencing interference until it clears. Usually, that?s during tropo ducting and it may only effect one tower but the system will disable that particular channel throughout the entire simulcast system. So the system users rarely ever experience any interference with their mobiles & portables because the system kind of hides it from them. It?s really sad that these Chinese radios are being dumped on the US market. Obviously, they?ve fudged the test data they submit to the FCC to be granted authorization to sell in the US. This is a good case where the FCC should go back to testing radios themselves or have an independent lab do the testing. Clearly, having the manufacturer submitting their own test data opens the door for falsifying the data. BTW, nice cameo on ALTV George! 73, Richard From: LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com [mailto:LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com] Sent: Friday, November 6, 2015 9:00 PM To: LakelandARC at yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [LakelandARC] QST - November issue Richard, Thanks, have county radios experienced frequent interference from various sources? The event was successful and made the club some money. We had people with some good ideas that carried them out the day of the event. There has been some feedback this morning from other club's members. A few wanted it earlier to start at 7am but mostly that they enjoyed the event and were impressed with our first try at this type of event. We surprised most everyone with free coffee and donuts. It was a nice benefit. They also were impressed with our selection of door prizes. There were no negative comments about anything just wanted it earlier. That stems from places like TARC Fest that start at daybreak and it was the Tampa guys making the suggestion. We had hams come from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Polk counties there. I am sure that I missed a few but will update that at the Christmas party. Congratulations to one of our own, George Gafford, KI4NBE. He was the big winner getting two of the drawings and two nice gift certificates. The church was having a yard sale at the same time as the hamfest and it was a nice addition. Some of our people made purchases and helped their carpet fund. They have just put new carpet in the church and are working hard to put the carpet money back into the general fund. Pastor Rusty Herrington, of Revolution Church, was pleased with the turnout and gave us a green light for future events. Kevin Rought, N4KMR, was the driving force in this successful event. He spent lots of time selecting a location and seeking out the nice list of donors for our door prizes. Our Vice President, Matthew Stevens, KK4FEM, his brother Andrew Stevens, WX4AMS, were true assets in the setup operation of the event making it run smoothly. Several other club members were running, lifting, fetching and doing during the whole event and it was truly a great team effort. Thanks to all. Sorry if I didn't list all of the names but I am always a brain cell short when it comes to remembering people on the spur of the moment. I will remember them all during the course of the next day or two. I will kick myself for not mentioning more. Our next on event will need even more volunteers to fill in the gaps that we noticed this time. We can never have to many workers. The VE team made a good showing and gave 4 exams during the event. We have had another great year with our VE team. Finally to our donors. They made all the difference in the world for our bottom line with a special thanks to Al Sheppard, W4ZSC, and Roy Bucher, K3YVS, with the help of Bob Siegel, WA4YFN. All the literature that I had read while working on the project seemed to tell me how to make the antenna, but not to much about why it worked. This is the one that finally made it 'click' for me...maybe you just have to find someone to explain things to you the right way. I think it would be great to spread the word about any other articles or resources that any of you might have run across and found helpful. If you have anything that you'd like to share with the club, please let me know, email to KK4FEM(at)arrl.net. Since we are an ARRL affiliate club, we are able to put the full text of any QST articles (new or old) on our website, blog, yahoo group, etc., as long as it is properly attributed to the source. Especially for newer hams (like me) I think this would be helpful towards the dual goals of the "Continuation and extension of the amateur's proven ability to contribute to the advancement of the radio art" and "[Expanding] the existing reservoir within the amateur radio service of trained operators, technicians, and electronics experts." (Part 97.1) Particularly the electronics experts part :-) So, please, if anyone has any useful information that you have found, just send it to me at KK4FEM(at)arrl.net, and we will put it on the blog and in the "files" section on the yahoo group. If you are familiar with complex numbers, it is easier to understand. The conditions at any point in the feed line can be expressed a R +- JX Vector number. R is the resistive component and JX is the reactive component (a Vector Quantity) This may sound very complicated, but once you understand it, it becomes simple and is the main tool for all antenna impedance matching calculations. Every transmission line has a characteristic impedance (determined by the spacing and the material (air or plastic) separating the wires. When the impedance's are perfectly matched, the feed line becomes resistive only regardless of the length. ie Maximum power transfer. To conclude, If you matching is *correct*, you have a *non-resonate (flat)* line that appears resistive, and It make no difference how long you feed line is. If your matching is in-correct, your feed line becomes part of the radiating antenna, and the length is extremely critical. Get Your Feet Wet starts at 0001 Z! We hope to see you there. Details below. 73 Tim, AC5SH GET YOUR FEET WET ACTIVITY DAY One of the biggest challenges with learning to operate CW is overcoming the "fright" of making those first contacts and learning to be comfortable in operating the CW mode. The purpose of this FISTS activity is to provide new or less experienced amateurs the opportunity to make CW contacts and learn to enjoy the mode. Operating in contests, QSO parties, or DX pileups is not a very good place to try operating CW for the first time. This activity will provide a periodic opportunity to encourage new and inexperienced amateurs to get on the air and practice operating CW. Hopefully many experienced CW operators will be willing to get on the air, slow down their CW, and help "Elmer" our new and less experienced members. This weekend activity is designed to provide you with the opportunity to practice your CW operating and gain some valuable experience. IT IS NOT A CONTEST. The activity will be held on the Third Sunday of every month. Operating times will be 0001 UTC to 2400 UTC. This activity will be conducted on the 80 and 40 meter bands, on or near the following Suggested Frequencies: 3.558 and 7.110. Suggested items for exchange are: Name, QTH, FISTS#, RST. Remember these are the minimum items and you can exchange whatever you want because this is not a contest. If you participate in a GYFW Activity, and submit a log showing a minimum of five (5) QSO's, you will have a chance to win a gift certificate at the end of the year. There will be two winners. The first will receive a $250 gift certificate and the second a $150 gift certificate. A random drawing will be held after the last GYFW Activity of 2015. Only active and life FISTS CW Club members are eligible to win the gift certificate, and winners can choose the amateur radio company from whom they want the gift certificate. When you send in your log, be sure to include some comments on your operating experience during the event and/or send your comments to Karl N2KZ at: feetwetlogs at fistsna.org. You can make general comments on the number of contacts, your station setup, etc. Also supply your call sign & Fists#. Be sure to use the Subject line: GYFW Feedback. Your comments will be listed in the next issue of The Keynote. Send in your Logs to the Get Your Feet Wet Activity Manager: Karl Zuk N2KZ 15 Flintlock Ridge Rd. I give up. I'm trying to install some PL-259's on some standard RG8 (not 8x or 58) cable that I just got in from the Wireman. (They said they sell miles of this stuff.) The cable looks great. But installing the connectors is proving to be rather challenging. (Uh... let me slightly rephrase that. Impossible.) It's been a few years since I've been on the air and had the "pleasure" of the connector installation experience. What can be so difficult? Strip the cable, screw down the connector, solder everything in, and jump up and down with joy. A trained monkey could do it. (I think I need one ...) But this time around something just seems different. I tried numerous PL-259's in the junk drawer that appear to be from different mfg'rs but no luck. The problem seems to be the outer diameter of the black plastic insulation jacket on this cable. RG8 is RG8 is RG8. Yes? MAYBE I can get ONE or 2 turns of the PL-259 onto the outer plastic cable insulation, but that's it. What am I doing wrong? Doesn't matter which connector I try. And no matter how much brute force I exert no luck. The cable insulation is obviously slightly too big for the ID of the PL-259 connectors that it will accept. I also see that there are crimp-on PL-259's available which I've never used. I've always used the traditional Amphenol UHF connectors. Anyone have any experience using the crimp-on type? Reliable? I'm just about ready to jump off a bridge. How difficult can this possibly be? Am I missing something here? The Youtube videos make it look so easy. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. My anti-depressant-rash-decision-making preventative medication runs out at midnight tonight and after that I'd rather not speculate what these connectors will drive me to do. LOL Any suggestions? (I believe it utilizes grid-block keying.) My AccuKeyer which was my first homebrew project when I was a novice back in 1976 bit the dust today and have been using it with my Brown Brothers straight key/paddle key combo for years. Unfortunately I have no test equipment to troubleshoot the keyer and figure it's probably time to get a new keyer. Since I've been off the air for quite a while, I could use some recommendations for a keyer that would be compatible with my Drake rig. I will say that I AM game if someone who has some test equipment would like to take a look at my AccuKeyer with me. But otherwise I figure a new keyer is probably a good idea. Comments appreciated. 73, Ed - N2TE ... QRZ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
