[LakelandARC] QST - November issue

George,

The county 800 system does experience occasional interference. Fortunately though the system will disable a channel that is experiencing interference until it clears. Usually, that’s during tropo ducting and it may only effect one tower but the system will disable that particular channel throughout the entire simulcast system. So the system users rarely ever experience any interference with their mobiles & portables because the system kind of hides it from them.

It’s really sad that these Chinese radios are being dumped on the US market. Obviously, they’ve fudged the test data they submit to the FCC to be granted authorization to sell in the US. This is a good case where the FCC should go back to testing radios themselves or have an independent lab do the testing. Clearly, having the manufacturer submitting their own test data opens the door for falsifying the data.

BTW, nice cameo on ALTV George!

Richard

Richard,

Thanks, have county radios experienced frequent interference from various sources?

Near where I live at the Polk City boundary line there are many sources of interfere. Any AM signal is nearly impossible, ham or broadcast.

I encourage everyone to read the page 74 article in the November issue of QST titled ARRL Laboratory Handheld Transceiver Testing.

Particularly those that may be considering purchasing any of the cheap Chinese HT’s being marketed to Hams. Just keep in mind it is the licensed Ham operator that is responsible for the proper “legal” operation of their radio(s). Those that are using these cheap radios may very likely be transmitting illegal spurious and/or harmonic radiation on NON ham frequencies – potentially causing harmful interference to other licensed users (public safety, commercial, & business users) which is a violation of part 97 rules. The old adage is true – you get what you pay for. For those that are considering one of these radios I would recommend saving up a bit more $$ and purchase a new or used radio from a reputable manufacturer.

Caveat emptor!

…keep the spurs to a minimum.

73,

Richard
