LARC REPEATER UPDATE

During the last several months the LARC repeater has being tested.  The repeater is set to the mode of Analog or Digital IN and Analog OUT, AMS mode (Automatic Mode Select).  This has proved to operate with no problems and seamless to most operators.  We are now ready to turn on the full function of the repeater this month.  We will be notifying Richard Sharp, KQ4KX, our repeater trustee, to activate this function.  The AMS setting of the repeater that will allow Analog IN and Analog OUT and Digital IN and Digital OUT.  The only requirement to make this work successfully is to activate your TONE SQUELCH for BOTH Transmit and Receive.  Each radio is different in their menu.  The tone for our repeater is 127.3 and should be set for BOTH transmit and receive.  This means that when you use your Baofeng UV5R or similar analog radio you will be able to use your handheld or base as  normal through the repeater.  You may also see your receive light on and not hear anything.  If that happens just push your MON button and you will probably hear a digital signal buzzing.  Setting the tone squelch for BOTH receive and transmit makes sure the digital transmission noise does not come out of your analog speaker.  Be courteous of the digital users if you see it in use.  When there is a break in the digital conversation you can actually transmit analog to analog.  The same is required of the digital users if the analog stations are in use please allow their conversations to continue or switch to analog to join in.  That is one of the abilities of the digital radios that they can do both and listen for both depending on how their mode is set up.  This works nicely on other repeaters already set to this mode.  I am a member of other clubs that use this set up and they have not experienced problems.  The one of the closest to Lakeland is the EPARS repeater in Dade City on 146.880, no tone in for analog but if you don’t want to hear the digital then turn on your receive tone squelch to 146.2.  

This is not an advertisement for buying a new radio.  It is just turning on the full capabilities of our repeater to allow our members to add even more capabilities for both analog and digital.  The next test after we settle in to the AMS mode is activate the WiresX mode or Echolink or both so ALL, both analog and digital operators can use the extra modes.  We can do this remotely without presently having internet access at our transmitter site.  This has been done before with Echolink by another club member and we will give it a try again. 

Please read your manuals for your particular radio and bring any questions about setting the tone squelch you may have to the September meeting.
