Easiest way to find spots are to go on DX Summit and run the call signs.  They have no set schedule.

Don suggested this location for breakfast next Tuesday, since the BrunchBox will be closed then.  There have been several other suggestions, It is hard to organize something like this on short notice, and especially when it is only for one day. Bottom line, this is as good a place as any.

From time to time I get a request from hams who are either snowbirds or who travel extensively, for some way to keep in contact with club members here in Lakeland. Sure, with the proper equipment and the good propagation, HF is a possibility. But more often than not, these same people are looking for a way to communicate that does not require much in the way of antennas and radios. For them, EchoLink is an option. I think it is a good tool for every ham to have in their pocket. 
 
 EchoLink should be of special interest to those who are new to the hobby, or do not have HF equipment and a license to travel those bands. With EchoLink, even a Tech can contact someone continents away.

 Background 
 EchoLink is a computer-based Amateur Radio system distributed free of charge that allows radio amateurs to communicate with other amateur radio operators using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology on the Internet for at least part of the path between them. I should add, that it is possible to communicate using EchoLink without any radio at all. All you need is a microphone and speakers on your computer, and you are ready to go. The software is free, but you do have to have to be a licensed ham to participate, and you do have to resister and receive your own node number. Both are free and painless. 
 
 In the past some of our club members used EchoLink to communicate with another member while he was traveling on business in Europe. From a computer in his hotel room he was able to connect through the Internet to a local repeater here in Lakeland which re-broadcasted his voice to a group of us having breakfast at a local restaurant. Of course, any ham within the range of the chosen repeater could have joined us as well. 
 
 One to many is only one way to communicate over EchoLink. One to one is also possible. I once spent over an hour chatting with a new ham living in Washington State, over EchoLink. He hadn?t purchased a radio yet, and I was his first contact. 
 
 Many to many is another option. If you can connect to a repeater with EchoLink capability by radio, you can open a repeater almost anywhere in the world. There, anyone one at either location can chat with each other. The Internet forms the link between the two repeaters, allowing anyone within range of one to talk to anyone within the range of the other. 
 
 One thing about Ham radio -- there is no shortage of different ways to communicate. Each has its merits. Give some thought to getting up to speed on EchoLink.

I know it's probably not allowed on the yahoo group however I'm in a hell of a bind! 


Anyone wanting to buy a TS-930 from me? It's been sitting on the table for quite a while now with what seems to be a transmit problem by voice! I haven't checked the CW portion of it. I could be wrong with what's wrong with it... My father had it and had said it needed to be repaired but I can't remember what. 


Just throwing a random number out..... $250- comes with microphone, external speaker that was used with it, power cable, owners and repair manual (I believe I have both)....

Hello to all,

 

The July meeting of LARC was especially good.  We had John Leahy, KK4ITX,
give a talk on portable operations to include a great "Go Kit", and a couple
of great antennas for portable use.  See more on the equipment on John's
page at:  http://zaarc.org/  There is lots of great information there to be
had.  

 

Secondly we had Don Jeering, KI4EFL, talk on magnetism with an interesting
visual presently.  

 

Thanks to both of our speakers for these information presentations.  

 

The rest of the year is upon us with the months just flying by.  23 July
2016 presents us with a couple of events.  First we have the LARC tailgate
at The Revolution Church, at the intersection of Kathleen Rd and Duff Rd.
Lakeland.  It starts at 7am and should be over by 1pm.  There will be
tailgating and inside tables. Contact Kevin Rought, N4KWR, for information
and tables.  ALSO, that same day will be the 7th Annual WARRIOR WALK Sat.
July 23rd 2016 / Time: 8am* First Presbyterian Church lawn.  Volunteers will
be needed for the event communications.  

 

The next few months will feature a picnic, date to be decided.  Some great
presentations, and then November will arrive with elections for the next
group of individuals to lead our club in the coming year.  There will be
some old faces return and a new President to elect.  The past three years
have gone by quickly and it is time for a new person to guide this club on
its future endeavors.  I will be sitting in the audience and taking part in
events but listening to the new ideas that will inspire and entertain us.  I
may even do a presentation or two in the coming years.  We will also be
looking for a hospitality person to take care of refreshments, coffee,
cookies, and the like.  Your charge is that of the coffee pot and its
accessories, the picnic box with paper plates, fork, spoon, and the like.
The coffee pot to each meeting and the picnic box to Field Day and the
picnics about 3 a year.  There you have it.  

 

To answer your question: No I am not leaving.  I am just passing along the
activities of the club to those that may do it better than me.  I will be
sitting in the audience and taking part in the activities as so many of our
past officers do at this time.  

 

If you desire one of these positions let me know.  Now is the time to start
thinking about running for an office.  You have a whole board to help you on
your way.  The past officers will always lend a hand.

 

See you at the tailgate or Warrior Walk or both.

Regarding "expert" status, I don't think I can claim that specifically, 
but if anybody has questions regarding Echolink/IRLP (collectively 
VoIP), I'd be happy to try and point them in the right direction! ;-) 
I've played with it quite a bit, and it is certainly a lot of fun to 
work with, especially while traveling!

Dirk's tests were posted on Yahoo's Navtex DXing Group <http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=MgOjE&m=3h8cuKFiOprzbnN&b=3wttrofYxXexNpDqyGALPA>  where some further interesting discussion seemed to confirm his findings. 

Here is what Dirk discovered, backed-up with his graph data, clearly pointing to the 'ideal height' at his location ... and probably yours as well. 

Hi all,

You may recall that to get rid of a source of QRM, my whip is now hanging from a rope-and-pulley system, about 5 .5 mtr from the house, at a height of 7 meter agl.
As the height of the whip can easily be changed, this is an ideal situation to test the behaviour of the whip wrt noise levels, optimal height etc..
I had done this test before some 4 years ago, but not very precise. Time to do it again, and documenting it.
What I also wanted to check, is if there were any noise sources of the own house possibly reaching the whip.
(how far does the "noise bubble" go in function of the height?)

The Perseus was tuned to 549 KHz Deutschlandfunk Nordkirchen, the station closest to 518.
2 markers were set, one to the signal, and a reference marker in a quiet spot nearby on 543 KHz, to get a reading for the noise floor.
The whip was then lowered in "1 meter each minute" steps, readings were taken and written to the marker file.

First the absolute values were plotted.
Note that: blue = noise floor, red = signal, and that the left and right axis scales have identical spans of 19dB, but are shifted, in order to get a compact graph.
We see that for a delta height of 6 meters:
-the noise floor goes up ~8dB, or 8/6 = 1.3 dB/m, almost linearly.
-the signal goes up ~14 dB, or 14/6 = 2.3 dB/m, clearly curved and showing a maximum at ~5..7 m.
The continuous lines are polynomic (2nd degree) regression lines.

The noise on the measurement values seems to increase with decreasing height.  Was this caused by my body standing under the whip, and near to the whip for the lowest measurements??

What really matters of course, is the signal over noise value, this is plotted below:

-Within a narrow 1 dB band, the curve shows a clear optimum in the region of 4..7 m agl, a familiar value often given as optimal by Roelof.
-The measurement was performed during the day and thus with ground wave propagation. As the whip is truly omnidirectional, I cannot see a reason why the behaviour would be different at low angle DX signals.
- At 5.5 meter from the house, the whip seems to be outside of the "noise bubble"

I have just checked the noise floor again at 518 (with no signal present)

Perseus set to 125 kS/s, Span/RBW 25/30.5 
Shield grounded: -125 dBm
Not grounded:  -110 dBm

That's a whopping 15 dB difference!
I have also buried the coax ~20cm deep from the grounding point to where it enters the house.

The ideal height was also that recommended by Roelof, PA?RDT, originally and points out that one of antenna-building's most sacred commandments ... "the higher the better", is not always true!

I have often recommended this simple antenna for those looking for a very effective yet low-footprint receiving antenna for use on the LF and MF bands.

 Dan Bolle --N9JBF-- is in the hospital and not expected to recover. His son is in town and is looking for help liquidating his fathers radio equipment. Everything is vintage, a real nostalgia trip for those who have been in the hobby since the fifties. Rich and I visited Dan's house here in Lakeland, and spoke with his son. Rich took several photographs of the equipment the son wants to sell. Time is of the essence on this one. The son does not live in Lakeland, and has to return North shortly.

It appears HRO is only taking over the big store in Minn. I talked with my friend who left AES about two years ago and moved to Plano Tx to help open the new HRO store there. He said for tax purposes they would not be moving into Florida. They are only after the "mother ship" up north and acquire the inventory at a reduced rate.

Good morning this bright and sunny Monday morning.  This week we have some
important items on the club calendar.  Those of you that go to the Tuesday
morning breakfast we will be there at the Brunch Box at the usual time of
9am. The same morning but a bit later takes QCWA members to lunch at The Egg
Factory, 1533 S. Combee Rd., Lakeland, in the plaza on the SW corner of
Crystal Lake Rd. and S Combee Rd.

 

The big events will both fall on Saturday 23 Jul.  

 

1.)  The Warrior Walk, will be underway at 8am at the First Presbyterian
Church, 175 Lake Hollingsworth Dr, Lakeland, on Lake Hollingsworth.  Bob
Doherty, KM4BAO, will be driving this event and working closely with the
coordinator, Anna Baker.  He will be sending out more information in the
next few days.  We are in need of more volunteers to man the positions
around the walk route.  Please contact me or Bob Doherty, KM4BAO, to get
involved in this important event.  Please make your contacts as soon as
possible to make sure that we have the proper amount of people to meet the

2.)  The next big item is on the same day.  The LARC tailgate party event
will be happening at the Revolution Church, 7315 Kathleen Rd., Lakeland, at
the corner of Kathleen Rd and Duff Rd.  This is North Lakeland area not far
from our Field Day site.  We will be setting up at 6am for an opening time
of 7am.  Use the repeater with consideration of the Warrior Walk that will
be on the same frequency that morning.  This event will last until around
1pm.  Lots to buy and sell.  

 

PLEASE:  If you are not going to go to the Tailgate please consider taking
the time to participate in the Warrior Walk.  You don't have to walk just
man a station around the lake to monitor the flow of walkers.  The Walk will
be over in time to head out to the tailgate and check out the items of
interest.

As Rich reminded us yesterday the club has a very busy week with 2 events this Saturday.  

At this moment I have only 3 of the 8 positions needed filled for the Warrior Walk. ( We could use up to 11 but I am trying to keep our commitment to the bare minimum.) 1 operator at each water stop station ( total of 4) and 4 operators to shadow 4 key organizers of the event and be sure they communicate their needs with each other through net control. For those who may not know the Warrior Walk honors the memory of Florida Service men and women who gave their lives in defense of our country.  All wars and conflicts are remembered but most of the families present lost their loved one?s in Afganistan and Iraq. In past years the crowd has averaged 1500 to 2000 attendees. 


The assignments are really easy and since this is my 3rd Warrior Walk I can tell you they are very emotionally fulfilling as well. 

I understand everyone cannot attend for various good reasons. I know how crazy my weekends can be. As a fellow club member I would like to ask each of you to take one more look at your early morning schedule this Saturday.  7:30AM and 10:30AM ( at the latest) This will allow time to attend our LARC Tailgate Party as well.
All you need is an HT. If you do not have one please let me know as I have several extra?s available. 

If you can make it please email Rich or myself as soon as possible.  I will email you back confirming where we will meet, your station assignment and review the radio protocol we will be using.

The August 1st 2016 LARC meeting will have guest speaker Chris Bloxsom,
N2KBK.  Chris is a member of EPARS, East Pasco Amateur Radio Society, GCARC,
Gulf Coast Amateur Radio Club, and ZAARC, Zephyrhills Area Amateur Radio
Club.  His will have several rigs on display for you to look at and ask
questions about at the end of his presentation as well as some information
directly from Yaesu.  Chris is one of the EPARS people that have a great
understanding of digital modes,C4FM, Wires X, and many more.  A DV4Mini
operating regularly from his tablet that affords him operation on several
different types of digital repeaters C4FM, D-Star, and DMR.  

 

We will be exposed and enlightened to all of these and more with the ability
to ask questions of a fellow ham that can answer your questions about
several modes available to all of us.  The new hams with Technicians will
find a wealth of information that will allow them to communicate around the
world on just their handheld.  

 

Please come out to the August meeting and take part in this interesting
presentation.  If all of that is not enough, then look no further, there
will be cake too.

I know there are 11 of us planning to be there. But things happen, and if he doesn't get this message in time..... we can most likely find something for you to do. However, we have been told to show up by 7:15 in order to have parking at the church. After then, parking can get crazy!

that Hara Arena, the home of Hamvention since 1964, is closing, but
Hamvention will continue. Hamvention 2016, the event's 65th running, was
also the last held in the six-building Hara complex. Hamvention 2017 will be
held at a new, yet-to-be-disclosed location in the Dayton area.

"The Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) regrets to inform our many
vendors, visitors and stakeholders that, unfortunately, Hara has announced
the closing of their facility," a news release from Hamvention General Chair
Ron Cramer, KD8ENJ, said today (July 29). "We have begun execution of our
contingency plan to move HamventionR 2017 to a new home. DARA and Hamvention
have enjoyed many successful years working together with Hara Arena and we
wish the Wampler family the best."

The news has struck the Amateur Radio community like a lightning bolt -
albeit tempered only by DARA's assurances that Hamvention will not be going
away as well.

"We are painfully aware of the loss this announcement will generate, which
is why we have fought so long and hard to prevent it," Hara Arena Marketing
Director Karen Wampler said in a news release. 

According to Cramer, DARA and Hamvention have been working on a contingency
plan in the event that the deteriorating Hara Arena ever should become
unavailable. "We have spent many hours over the last few years evaluating
possible locations and have found one in the area we believe will be a great
new home!" The announcement said that DARA and Hamvention expect to make a
formal announcement soon "introducing our new partner."

"We all believe this new venue will be a spectacular place to hold our
beloved event," Cramer said. "Please rest assured we will have the event on
the same weekend and, since it will be in the region, the current
accommodations and outside events already planned for Hamvention 2017 should
not be affected."

"We look forward to your continued support as we move to a new future with
The Dayton Hamvention."

A hockey team's cancellation of its upcoming season earlier this month had
raised questions about the future availability of Hara Arena for
HamventionR. Hara Arena has been facing long-standing financial problems -
including unpaid property taxes. Renovations promised for the 2016
Hamvention never materialized.

Hamvention attracted more than 25,000 visitors this spring and is worth
millions of dollars to the Dayton area economy.

The Wampler family has owned and operated Hara Arena since its humble
origins in the 1950s, when Wampler Ballarena - then a dance hall and now an
exhibit hall familiar to Hamvention visitors - was built in what had been a
family-owned orchard.

Subject: Ham 4 rotator repairs

Anyone in the club know of a local ham that know or do any repairs on ham 4 rotors? 

The brake on mine is releasing but not moving. I took it apart and found a small metal strap that's not connected and seemed to have broken off as well as a small spring bouncing around it it...

If anyone knows of anyone who would be willing to look at it and possibly do any repairs that would be greatly appreciated.
