Sparks, KM4BAP, is the proud owner of a new SDR-USB dongle. He asked me to take a look at it. My problem is a weakness for problems. :-) It turns out that with this device, like many other devices you get from China, the instructions leave a lot to be desired. In this case they were either out of date, or incorrect. The solution was less a matter of brilliance, and more a matter of ?even a blind hog finds an acorn from time to time.? If you played the sound clip, you know it works, and fairly well. I attempted to attach a picture. If it doesn't play it can be found on either of the links below. In case you are wondering, the unit is the size of a pack of cigarettes. It comes with an antenna, which is useless. The sound clip sent previously was generated from his radio using a 20-meter dipole. The unit cost around $50. Hey everybody, We are planning an impromptu on the air event on the 17th to celebrate the official 40th anniversary of the club. I am looking for anyone who is interested in operating at any time during the day (from your own station), using the club call sign. If you want to participate, please send me an email off-list with: a) what time you will be available b) what band you want to operate George Gafford KI4NBE already has the 6pm-on slot for 40m. Andrew WX4AMS and I will probably work 20m sometime in the afternoon, after work. Rich N4ESS and Peggy N4PEG will cover any slots that aren't taken. I need to know ahead of time, so we don't have any band conflicts. Hope to hear from you! 73, Matthew KK4FEM -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We don't want to wind up with multiple ops on the same band, using the same call...the FCC frowns on that. We wound up with 141 contacts on 20m and 40m, and lots of well wishes from people who were happy to hear about a club that's been around 40 years! Thanks to George Gafford KI4NBE for all his hard work, he stayed on till 4am Friday morning, fighting S5-S8 noise levels and "tuner uppers" to pull in 41 contacts on 40m. Rich N4ESS and Peggy N4PEG got on after lunch, and tried for 15 and 20m, but the bands were miserable - no luck. Andrew WX4AMS and I worked 100 stations from our QTH, mostly on 20m. The conditions were far from ideal, but there were enough other stations on keep us busy. We made a few club-to-club contacts, and even one HK station in Columbia. A special thanks to John KK4ITX. He stuck with it all morning on 20m, calling CQ through AWFUL band conditions with no takers. He's a lot more patient than I am... Glad that the bands improved later on for the evening ops! More details to come at the April meeting! - Matthew KK4FEM -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I think they said "all amateur licensees are eligible" so as to include operators in other countries. Not all countries limit their lower level licensees to 10m and up on SSB. Stations in other countries get points for contacting NA stations in the sprint. Congrats on the new license by the way! Sorry the sprint doesn't include anything in the Tech bands...it'll be fun even just listening though. This is a really different type of contest. - Matthew KK4FEM Sent from my iPhone > -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The second item under Helpful links will direct you to the ARRL site. There could be other hamfests, not promoted there. You will just have to keep your ears open for those. I find the best way to use this ARRL feature is to put in my zip code, then ask for a search within 100 miles.
