We had a group of 53 show up for the meeting. A check of the records show that we now have 83 dues paying members in our club. We had one person test and pass the extra class exam and that was John Leahy, KK4ITX. Congratulations to our new extra class. The March for Babies, March of Dimes event on April 30 had a good turnout and we were able to man the stations around Lake Hollingsworth with no problems. Our youngest member Liam Holzer, KM4STS, 8 years old, got his parents Aimee, KM4STT, and Leon, KM4STU, out to assist him. Liam manned his post and reported in on his HT. I asked if he drove to the meeting but he let Mom and Dad take care of the transportation. We had the pleasure of having several visitors to the club. We welcomed Duane Archibald, N4WDH, of Wesley Chapel, president of the East Pasco Amateur Radio Society, EPARS. Thanks for coming Duane. We were also fortunate to have a couple of visitors that are getting interested in amateur radio and stopped by to see what they could learn about our hobby. We will see them back in the next few months for their technician tests. Fred Delaney, K1DU, is getting us ready for field day and is getting the signup sheets filled with operators. Please contact Fred and get ready to support LARC field day. Fred does a great job of organizing this event each year and takes great pride in making sure that we are successful. Thanks Fred. Matthew Stevens spoke on the use of Log Book of the World, LOTW, and how to get started in using this useful tool. Next meeting Bob Siegel, WA4YFN, will be speaking on generators and emergency power. Bob has years of business experience in this area and will bring some great information to the meeting. I look forward to hearing his presentation. Al Sheppard, W4ZSC, was with us in spirit as he is in India at this time having just traveled from Dubai and will be back later this week. There are several schools around the nation and around the world that take part in designing and launching CubeSats. They are sent to the ISS and then astronauts launch them from a special spring loaded launcher. The latest of the CubeSats to be launched are listed in this link on QRZ.com. A good read and links to the separate schools that built the satellites. All of them operate in the ham bands for video and telemetry. Take a look as this might spark some interest in a new direction in Ham Radio for some of you. http://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/launched-4-cubesat-satellites-by-the -iss-space-station.523997/ Rich Kennedy - N4ESS President Lakeland Amateur Radio Club 813-240-5614 n4ess at tampabay.rr.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The event, which gets under way at 1300 UTC and wraps up at 2100 UTC, is conducted each year in advance of hurricane season. "The purpose of this event is to test Amateur Radio Station equipment, antennas and computers prior to this year's Hurricane Season, which starts June 1 and runs through November 30," said WX4NHC Amateur Radio Assistant Coordinator Julio Ripoll, WD4R. "This event is good practice for ham radio operators worldwide as well as National Weather Service (NWS) staff to become familiar with Amateur Radio communication available during times of severe weather." The annual Station Test is not a contest or simulated hurricane exercise. WX4NHC will be on the air on various bands and modes. The station also often takes advantage of the test to perform operator training. WX4NHC will make brief contacts with participating stations to exchange signal reports and basic weather data. For example, stations may report "sunny" or "rain" or "cloudy" in describing the conditions at their locations. Ripoll said WX4NHC will operate on HF, VHF, UHF, 2 meter and 30 meter APRS, and available via Winlink (subject line must contain "//WL2K") at, wx4nhc at winlink.org . "We will try to stay on the Hurricane Watch Net frequency of 14.325 MHz most of the time," Ripoll said. He explained that due to space and equipment limitations, WX4NHC will deploy up to three operators per shift, so the station cannot be everywhere and on every mode simultaneously. "You may be able to find us on HF by using one of the DX spotting networks, such as DX Summit (http://dxsummit.fi/#/)," he suggested. WX4NHC also plans to be on the VoIP Hurricane Net from 2000 until 2100 UTC (IRLP node 9219; EchoLink WX-TALK Conference node 7203). In addition, the station will be active on South Florida VHF and UHF repeaters. QSL cards are available to participating stations via WD4R; include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Do not send cards to the National Hurricane Center. Visit the WX4NHC website at http://www.wx4nhc.org for more information about the station.
