From matthew at mrstevens.net Mon Aug 6 06:24:29 2018 From: matthew at mrstevens.net (Matthew Stevens) Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2018 09:24:29 -0400 Subject: [LARC-CQ] QRP Event Sunday, Aug. 19 Message-ID: Hey everyone! Mike Shreve and I have participated in the NJQRP Club Skeeter Hunt for the last couple of years. It's a fun, 4 hour informal QRP contest, where the goal is to operate portable with QRP and/or homebrew equipment. This year Mike and I are planning to operate out at Colt Creek State Park. The contest starts at 1pm, so we will probably be there a little earlier than that (12:30 or so) to set up antennas. We thought maybe some of you would like to join us at the park! Initially we were just going to operate from our trucks, but if we want to make this an informal club event, there is a better option. Colt Creek has picnic pavilions on the west side of Mac Lake, which are $50 to reserve for the day. I'll put a basket in the back of the meeting room tonight,* if you're interested in coming out to participate in a fun QRP event, please consider dropping a few bucks in the basket to cover the cost of renting the pavilion.* If we have the pavilion, we can handle as many people as want to come out for the event. No food or anything will be provided, but you are welcome to bring a picnic dinner. There is even a grill at the pavilion if you're so inclined. I'll be bringing my 80m end fed with MTR4B and ZM2 tuner, and maybe an FT-817 as a backup rig. This is a CW and SSB contest, so feel free to bring whatever (QRP) rig you want, homebrew, kit built, or commercially built. The more the merrier, either to use on the air or just show off your building skillz :-) Here is the link to the contest info page, you can send Larry, W2LJ and email and he will hook you up with a Skeeter Number! I'm #93, and Mike is #94... http://www.qsl.net/w2lj/ See you tonight! 73, - Matthew nj4y -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks to everyone who contributed towards the rental! Some information: Remember this is a QRP event. That means 10w on SSB and 5w on CW. There are picnic tables, and a charcoal grill. You are welcome to bring snacks or lunch/dinner if you'd like. I'll bring along a flat of water bottles to share, anything beyond that is up to you! There are bathrooms a short distance from the pavilion. There is a paved walkway between the parking lot (where the bathrooms are located) and our pavilion. Preferably, no antennas in the trees. While the rangers have never given me any trouble at Colt Creek for hanging small diameter wires in the trees, since we are likely to have a bunch of antennas up, it would be best if you brought some kind of self-supporting antenna. I'll be using an 80m end fed, with a 20' fishing pole for support. I am planning to get there around 12-12:30 after church. I will be paying for the reservation when I get there - so if I'm not there yet, you can just go ahead down to the main pavilion area on Lake Mac. We are in the first non-enclosed pavilion on the west side of the lake, "Snowy Egret" I think it's labeled. Here's a map: I've also registered the club call for the contest. You are welcome to use it (as long as someone else is not on that band already), or register for your own skeeter number. Info on registering, rules, and the contest exchange can be found at http://www.qsl.net/w2lj/ Directions to the park can be found here: https://goo.gl/maps/MEtGqKsJnc62 73, and see you on the 19th! - Matthew nj4y -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... My wife and I are snowbirds from Pennsylvania. We live at Cypress Lakes for part of the year. I wanted to let everyone know that Rex Mott KC1WE, from Cypress Lakes passed away on August 14. He lost his battle with cancer shortly after being diagnosed about a month or so back. I did not know him for long but we became good friends shortly after I moved to Lakeland in 2016. Not only was he a friend he was a mentor who encouraged me to get into amateur radio close to 60 years after I lost interest during my squandered youth! He was a fantastic Elmer and teacher.Rex and I spent many afternoons working on some of his projects which included restoration of an old Kenwood HF transceiver. I spoke with his wife Maggie last night and she is having a memorial service for him at Cypress Lakes in the near future. Depending on the date, I don't know if I will be able to make the trip down from PA, but I am sure that there are some folks at LARC that would want to participate. I will let you know when this will take place as soon as the arrangements are made. I bought it earlier this year, but with everything else going on just don?t have time to put it together and tinker with. I paid $119 for it. $100 and it?s yours, I can bring it to the meeting on Monday. It?s a neat little Arduino based 10w, HF all mode radio. There are tons and tons of mods you can do to it, enabling various functions and improvements. If you?re into arduino, the sketches for the firmware are available online, and you can program it yourself to enhance its function. Good for experimenters with time on their hands - which I am lacking :-) It also will work fine right out of the box, with some minimal assembly. You have to hook up the screen and ardiuono controller, the RF board is already assembled. You can mount it in the enclosure of your choice, or just leave the board open for tinkering 73 - Matthew nj4y Sent from my iPhone From n2kbk at yahoo.com Thu Aug 30 03:54:33 2018 From: n2kbk at yahoo.com (Chris Bloxsom) Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2018 10:54:33 +0000 (UTC) Subject: [LARC-CQ] Ham Radio Picnic - Open to all hams References: <793351788.794541.1535626473796.ref@mail.yahoo.com> Message-ID: <793351788.794541.1535626473796@mail.yahoo.com> AA4CBAA4CB at ARRL.NET Chris Bloxsom P.O.
