John,
I have successfully used an EFHW antenna in two places and in different configurations. They can work ok but in my limited space lot the vertical is probably a better choice.

For Chris, KO4YAW, there are a few EFHW - End Fed Half Wave antennas available from commercial sources as well as ARRL. Some cover most of the HF bands, some are limited with the band coverage. I have used them starting from a pole 15- 20 ft high and using a slingshot to get a line over a 50 ft tree then drooping over the other side. Which one you get depends on how much land you have and what kind of far end support you have. In one setup the wire turned 70 degrees and came back down to about 20 ft. If you want 80 M you need a longer EFHW for best operation. Feel free to contact me directly for more information and/or a picture.

73,
Jerry

An 18-20 ga wire is all you need for 100w. Mine serves me quite well as I have hit all corners of the US and many European countries at only 5w CW & SB.

Meanwhile I am continuing to learn about different aspects of DMR. Such as I found out that 3100 is available on the Polk repeater so I added that to the code plug.

My best using that setup in my motorhome was 65 miles to a repeater in Orange, CT. If you are going to rely on your HT antenna 100% of the time, as many do your results will not be very rewarding.

So you will not hear much activity unless someone is on L2, L9 or selects one TG from TS1. Julian’s machines (W4VCO) have different settings. Talkgroups L2, L9, TG8 (The Ridge), and FL SW are on Full time.
