John,

I think we had a couple goals in mind for this: The first, as you've said, was to get more people interested in CW from among the VHF/UHF guys. Many have expressed such an interest. The other was to enable or enhance emergency communication between the various nearby counties and throughout Polk county using CW as a backup for the 2M simplex when and if one or more repeaters became inoperable. We have demonstrated that simplex communication, even within the county, is spotty at best. With enough operators and enough relays, we could get the job done, but we're always looking for ways to improve.

So... this is where we are currently. I would be very interested in the MCW/FM even if it can only accomplish the first part of our expressed goal and it doesn't pan out for EmComm. If a simple to build kit can get more people on the air on CW, then I am on board 100%. I had envisioned a regularly scheduled "traffic training net" where the Net Control Station would take check-ins, pass any traffic that might come along. Simple in and out using standard net procedures to teach the basic principals of a CW traffic net. I have long encouraged anyone interested to tune into the Carolina Slow Net (CSN) every night at 2000 local at 3.571 or the Georgia CW Training Net (GTN) - every night at 2100 local on 3.549. These are nets especially geared towards slow speed net operations and welcome any ham who wants to check in. Not everyone has 80M capability and, so far, I have not heard a single person from around here check in. (FYI - I'm on both, every night, and NCS on Friday night for GTN and Sunday night for CSN.) Join us if you're interested.

From everything I'm reading, the ability to use HF for nearby communication has everything to do with antenna configuration, so that's where I'm focusing my attention at present. 73
