I have had a FT-818d for a couple of years and like it very much. It is the perfect rig for my park & beach outings.  My QRZ page KK4ITX - Callsign Lookup by QRZ Ham Radio will show my "package" made from a $11 plastic ammo box.  The 7AH battery is used as ballast to hold the unit on a table.  I can be set up and operating in 2-3 minutes.
Not sure if the email reflector allows pics or links but if not then just look me up on QRZ.  If you need more details on the package, feel free to contact me at kk4itx at arrl.net.
Stay safe in your travels,
JohnKK4ITX

 Chris,
I have one and like it very much. The 300Hz filters for CW are not available anywhere, but you can still find the 2300Hz filters if you work mainly SSB. These are getting more scarce every day, however. The addition of the mechanical filter improves the audio significantly. If you are going to travel with it, I think the Portable Zero "Escort" - a well-made, powder-coated frame - is an excellent investment to protect the knobs and dials on this radio. At 6 watts, it is great for QRP and you can add a solid-state amp to bump output up to 35-40 watts for under $300. (link below) I have used one in combination with my FT-817 for several years now.
Having said all that, for about the same money, you can get an FT-891 w/ 100 watts 6-160 and some built-in filtering. Doesn't have UHF/VHF, but unless you're an avid QRP enthusiast, this is more bang for your buck on HF and you can add a UHF/VHF legal limit option for relatively little investment, giving you better performance across the board.
Just one man's opinion; free and worth every penny...

I have been playing around with the idea of getting it since I am on the road so much of my time (probably about 50% of the year). I would really like to hear your thoughts about it.

Thanks and 73,

-Chris
